A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I don't know but I do know that the number of opinions will exceed the number of contributors :)

    Informative video on motorcycle oil

Thanks for posting that. Good video, well presented. You want oil to deal with gearbox, clutch and pistons, it has to be special. My new ride has a dry clutch and separate gearbox. This opens up a whole range of traditional oils doing traditional jobs Might the debate about this be clearer if...

    Debunking the tire age myth

I suppose what it boils down to is that if you are putting your neck on the line, who do you trust more. I've ridden a set of practically new Pirelli Street Demons this year that are at least ten years old with no complaints but were for most of that time stored in a dark corner of the garage...

suzuki gs1000s charging - or rather lack of charging

Disconnect the three wires from the stator to the R/R. Run the motor at about 5000rpm and check the AC voltage between each pair of stator wires. You should be getting 70V + on each pair ideally.

    Blowing fuse

Was it the left indicator both times? Breaking my own rule here but have a look at the main harness bundle at the steering stem. Over time wires rub here and develop breaks that short the supply to ground.

    LED blinkers+running lights+brake lights

The old flasher relies on current to heat things up and bend them to switch the blinkers on and off. LEDs do not draw enough to make the old type flasher work. You can either rig it so that the LEDs draw extra current, which defeats one of the advantages of LEDs, or get a flasher that will work...

    Plug oiling up

Exhaust would be the most likely? If you remove the header from #1, get the plugs out and turn the motor over from the ignition pick up side you should be able to get a view of the valve head and stem.

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

This is the first machine with ABS for me. As long as it behaves itself I'm okay with it. Who knows it could save a low speed spill some day on a muddy, leafy lane. It's not the servo system so there is the option to remove it. The brakes are incredible. One finger and it's like dropping an...

My front wheel wanted a trial separation...

My wheel incident was with a Fiat Punto. Got distracted with a phone call in the middle of putting a wheel back on and a mile into the test drive it nearly came off. I've never seen a front fork cap come loose of it's own accord.

My front wheel wanted a trial separation...

Yes, well, a metaphorical one at least. Probably best to bring it back to the shop and let them sort it out. If they value their reputation they should and the likelihood that this loosening is pure coincidence is so low, it's effectively zero, and they will know that.

My front wheel wanted a trial separation...

We forget to tighten wheel nuts. At least, I managed it once, never to be repeated. At this point I would assume damage to the threads in the fork and have them checked out carefully before replacing the screws with new. Then check the bearing surface on the fork and cap for hammer damage. More...

    No oil pressure

+2 for checking the clutch basket engagement with the pump drive. When I got my 850 the oil pressure light came on at idle when leaning right and on the overrun. Leaning left at idle or engaging gear put it off. Clutch was assembled wrong and the helical gears popped the basket on and off of the...

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

Thank you. I was thinking this might be my last bike until the dealer told me the previous owner was eighty when he hung up his boots. He was supposedly a stickler for maintenance. We'll find that out in the next few weeks. I seem to have fixed an issue with the ABS self check. Looks like it's...

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

They say that in spite of all our spreadsheets, every decision is ultimately emotional :) On paper the Strom was clear leader..... The 1100R followed us home. We went for a ride at dusk in 29F. Bones still cold this morning. I had an R100RT thirty years ago and got quite comfortable with the...

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. It is appreciated. Been to see the DL1000 and it's a great machine. It starts and runs like a champ, no sign of clutch chudder and charging fine. I can flat foot on it, felt a bit top heavy with Mary on the back. At heart we are naked bike types...

    Clutch Oil Seal Location

Might this have something to do with the oil supply to the pinion shaft. I seem to recall some later 850s had an oil jet in the top of the clutch case cover.

Opinions on DL1000 V Strom as an 850 replacement

I am replacing the GS850 with something newer and there is a 30000 mile 2004 DL1000 available locally. At this point I want pillion comfort and reliability. I don't mind wrenching, just don't need to do more than reasonable. Doing less than 2000 a year and a lot of that is two up on back roads...
