A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Misfiring at idle when hot, ethanol problem maybe?

It sounds like an electrical issue, no spark. Low voltage at coils or bad coils, bad connections somewhere.

    Thank you very much, sir.

anyone go for a ride today? Pics?

I went for a local ride after setting the valves.

Must remove pistons before pulling crank from top case?

Why not separate the pistons? Since you are this far along in the work, you might as well. You risk scratching the pistons by not removing them. As to whether or not you can do what you ask, I don't know, but I would remove them.

    Air filter choice.

Stock is the most reliable and durable. They make them that way for a reason. The GS850 is not a racebike.

    running engine without gearcase oil

I wouldn't feel right at all running it without oil. It's there for a reason.

Gs1000 camshaft sprocket plastic chipped off

I didn't know those were there. They aren't on my bike. Suffice to say that the destruction may continue and if a piece should get jammed in between a sprocket and chain, possible damage could result. If it were my bike, I would either replace or find a way to remove the plastic completely...

Proper re-thread method on stripped valve cover bolts

Using Helicoil or similar is the proper way to repair this and it is very easy. I don't even use a drill but use a hand tap handle with the drill bit as it usually cuts the soft aluminum like butter. The number refers to the strength of the bolt.

After 37 years of owning motorcycles, I did it-

T2 was the reason. Saw the bike in that movie and I was hooked on it. This one has efi and a different, slightly larger motor, but is essentially the same bike.

After 37 years of owning motorcycles, I did it-

I stumbled across a 2006 Fatboy with only 12000 miles on the clock. I still have my GS1000 and the others, but this is a fun cruiser. I almost died from a delayed internal bleed from a routine colonoscopy last October, so I figured why the hell not.

in-line fuel filter?? why isn't there one?

Your suggestion as to brand is? And it was on the bike when I got it.

in-line fuel filter?? why isn't there one?

I don't know... I was running the clear lawnmower filter when I got the bike, but was having flow problems so I ditched it. I don't have a rusty tank and don't run a filter other than the what is in the petcock. No problems for years now.

in-line fuel filter?? why isn't there one?

The gas is filtered on it's way out of the fuel nozzle at the gas station.

    Basket Case Project 1980 GS1000

I feel obligated to step in and say that I am glad this bike is getting attention. Mine was originally red, however I painted it black and used the red pinstripes. It is bone stock, except for green Dyna coils and charging fixes, and has 40k on it. The motor has not been opened except for...

    Number of stator poles question.

OK, so I am wondering... My bike, a 1980GS1000E, has what type and I did replace the stator a few years ago with Rick's unit. Could they have sent the wrong one? My charging output is not the best, barely charges the bike. Voltage goes up to about 13.7-14 and I am running the SH775. I have...
