A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Potential sale 1980 gs550L project + parts near Seattle, WA

Hi All, A number of years ago now, I wanted to get into motorcycles, stumbled across a 1980 gs550 locally, and then went down some rabbit holes. Now, I'm married, we have a 1yo baby, and I have a long list of hobbies and interests that are higher priorities. I haven't had a chance to pull...

    Gs500 forks on gs550L?

Based on a series of messages that I exchanged with Chuck78 a few years back I bought a set of rebuilt gs500 forks and front caliper long with a gs1000 triple tree and a rotor off some other bike that was supposed to mount up to my existing front wheel by simply overboring the mounting holes...

Questions about fitting GS500 master cylinder on 1980 GS550

Hi All, I'm working on swapping my 1980 GS550 front end with one from a GS500. I believe I need to use the GS500 master cylinder to have the correct ratio with the brake caliper cylinder, but there are a bunch of MCs on ebay without a handle. Does anyone know if my gs550 handle is compatible...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

I'm interested in one set. Would love it if we got to 6 sets, but I can afford it at 3 sets if I have to.

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

@Berti I'm definitely still interested. I have donor 550 and 650 engines and mls baskets. If you have the energy to organize the piston order, let me know. Also, definitely interested in hearing about peoples' progress and learning experiences. I've heard some stuff about needing to add an oil...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

Hi Berti, Myself and at least one other member have talked a bit about another purchase. He was looking at two sets, so we probably have enough for an order. It just hasn't been priority for either of us. I can't speak to wiseco vs the kit you mention other than to say that wiseco is a really...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

Hey there, I started another thread awhile back about getting another group buy going for the wiseco pistons. I also posted about it on at least one other forum. I'm still planning to do it. I exchanged a few messages with chuck78 recently and got a huge amount if useful info about the build...

    Rear brake caliper seizing

I'd heard of using a single strand of wire to clear the return port on the MC. I wasn't able to find a wire that was thin enough to fit the port and rigid enough that it seemed to be accomplishing anything. The compressed air seems like it's done the trick though (120psi from my compressor). I...

    Rear brake caliper seizing

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I'm pretty confident that that hole is clear now since I specifically blew compressed air through it tonight, but I guess it could've been clogged prior to that. I'll reassemble everything again and hope for the best.

    Rear brake caliper seizing

Bit of a long post, but I could really use some help and I'm trying to lay out everything I've done or tried so far. I'm having trouble getting my rear brake caliper to function properly on my 1980 gs550L. It's a twin piston caliper with one piston on each side of the rotor. Three times now...

Second group purchase of wiseco 740cc pistons

I'm starting a new thread to gather people together for a second piston order. I'm interested in one set and I was just contacted by someone else that wants a second set so we probably just need one more person to get the $500/set price. If you are interested in purchasing a set of pistons...

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

Thanks Charlie, I appreciate the info, I'll contact Chuck78 about the gasket buy. I haven't done any engine builds so I can't speak to exhaust port sleeves, I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread though. Tom

Potential Group Purchase - Wiseco GS650 741cc pistons

Let me know if I should start my own thread, I'm trying to keep this relevant to the group buys you all have already done. I'm just getting my 1980 gs550 up and running, so of course it's time to start thinking about modifying it! It looks like the wiseco piston buy is long since finished and...

    Help identifying a motorycle

Thanks Steve! Neat information about it being near the end of the year run. I finally dug down far enough and just found the signed title from the PO so that will hopefully make life a little bit easier when I get the to DOL. I'm really looking forward to riding this thing finally! As you say...

    Help identifying a motorycle

----EDIT---- Just found the signed title from the PO so I know what the rubbed off characters on the VIN tag are. Big thanks to Steve for the quick reply and the cool fact about it being one of the last 1980 MY bikes. ------- Hi All, I bought an old GS550L a couple of years ago and I've been...

Need a crash course in wiring. 78 GS750E

The main thing is the color coding. The image you posted has been colored in by someone. Assuming they did it correctly and you bought a harness from the same year as your bike the colors should match up the the torn up harness. It looks like connectors are indicated by the rectangles (probably...

    New to me 1980 GS550L

Hi Everyone, I bought a 1980 GS550L back on the 11th and I've been working through the stuff on BikeCliff's site, I got the carbs all cleaned up with new o-rings, intake boots and o-rings and new weatherstripping on the airbox. I just realized that the feeler gauges I had from working on some...
