1000S Paint Work Almost Done?

Looks great! I've been following the progress on your album, and I'm anxious to see it all back together. I remember seeing an aftermarket exhaust. Are you sticking with that or going back to stock? Also, did you lay on the dry decals to get an idea of where the color breaks were, or did you adjust them to fit the stripes after you painted the tank? Inquiring painter minds need to know..;)

I’m using a regular GS1000 exhaust since the 1980 1000ST had a unique exhaust that’s almost impossible to find. I’ve been told that the 1000L exhaust is very similar, or identical even (although the part numbers are different), so I’m keeping my eye’s open for one.

One of the first things I did before stripping the factory paint was photograph where the two tone break lines fell. During the painting process, I did dry-fit the decals to guide me further. To be honest with you there are some flaws in the decal's, or maybe I should say my application of the decals. The factory decals were vinyl, so they can be more easily stretched, but the Reproduction Decal's graphics are very thin and I found them hard to work with on some of the curved surfaces. Of course, now that I'm up the learning curve, the project is done.

Nice work Ed. I have a set of the Reproduction decals for my 700 and figured the decals needed to be applied to a wet surface like window tint. Still need to paint mine so it's nice to have that confirmed since they didn't send any instructions with the set.

Dang Ed, that thing looks fabulous! Cant wait to see it complete..Super super job!

I was wondering what the fix to your tank was going to be.

Ed VERY-VERY nice work! are you going to do it for a living now?

Held the hem flange with these boards and then pinched them together to bring the tank back into shape.

Damn Ed, the more of your paint I see, the more impressed I am. Maybe someday I can get things set up to give a go at it myself.. DAMN fine work sir. Thats gonna be one gorgeous machine when you're done.

Looking good Ed. Lucky for me I got to paint mine at the same time, thanks again. :D

Hey Dan,

Thought I took some photos that day we set up the "paint booth", which showed your parts, but for the life of me I can't find them. Messed up on that one for sure.

For you guys reading this thread, Dan and I painted our parts pretty much side by side. Dan's dad came along and brought beer too! Since "mistakes" only occur when you F*ck up TWO times, I shared my "learning experiences" with him so he didn't have to go though the same things; after learning the hard way about runs with the HOC clear I told him to lay it on a smig dry and after my tank fell over on the ground (Dan thankfully wasn't there for that), he taped off his stuff on the underside to make sure that wasn't going to happen to him.:D Smart man.

I notice on the pic of bottom side of tank along the area where the petcock is located it looks like it has been welded or patched with something. My tank is rusted pretty bad in this area and wanted some details if this was the case with your tank. THANKS!!! BTW Great job on paint, I hope I can do as well.

Crap, sorry to hear about the paint booth foibles. Parts positioning in the paint booth is critical; especially if the booth is not very big.

IIRC, I had just finished my ED 1/4 fairing and it was the last piece. When trying to move it i got my sleeve right in the paint and screwed up the pearl. There was no way to salvage it; had to strip the whole thing and start over. :(

Your parts look great now , so we can just mentally block that period of frustration and chaos :o.

After derusting my tank with phosphoric acid, it was sealed over with Por-15 tank sealer - the silver stuff. The Por-15 sealer is good stuff I think, much better than Kreem for example from my experience but I wouldn't use it to patch holes. Caswell's sealer is an epoxy resin and seems pretty good stuff too, and it's much thicker than Por-15 sealer so it would be more appropriate for a tank with holes I think.

Looks great Ed, you are an artist with more patience than I have. Give me an engine and I will go to town. Paint stuff and I do it out necessity. Dan

nice work sir! Did you paint the engine itself? What did you use and what was the color.

I am thinking my 1100 engine could you a coat to bring everything up to tidy.

Jim

Note to self:

Send fuel tank, tail peice and side covers to Ed for repainting....

Bravo, Ed!! AWESOME work, sir! :D

Jim

The engine was painted with POR-15 aluminum color Engine Enamel after sand/bead blasting the metal. The engine covers were polished and then cleared with POR-15 Glisten clear. http://www.por15.com/ The Glisten clear is not rated for high temperature so gambling at bit on that.

Hi Ed, wonderful work with the gun, they didn't leave the factory looking that good in those days! I am planning to use the POR 15 aluminium engine enamel on my GSX, what is your opinion on the POR 15 aluminium as a colour match to the original scheme? I realise its not made as an ex-factory colour but is it close do you think? Thank you for the great pics, cheers.

Having seen it I would say it's a pretty good match maybe just a touch bright but that could be because I'm not old enough to have ever seen a stock one new!!
