1100/1150 oil cover difference pics

OK,

here are the pics of the differences in the oil filter covers of the gs1100 and the 1150's.

as you can see the lower right corner has a ridge built into it to restrict the oil flow.

There is a notch in it for some seepage.

It would be a pretty ugly thing to put on an 1100 cover and no cooler....
or mix them up by mistake......can anyone say anchor?

Thanks for the pics. Explains the thing really clearly. So for my 750 which doesn't have the external oil fittings, I should tap a fitting into the recess with the notch as a feed point for the cooler and also a return line elsewhere in the cover?

Yes, big mistake. My guess is that the notch delivers just enough oil to keep the engine alive at an idle. That is, however, just a guess.

As you can see, most of the oil is diverted to the cooler.

Just a factual question...does this mean the oil going throuhg the cooler bypasses the oil filter? The oil goes from the outside of the filter through the inside and on its way up through the pressure switch etc etc. Does the bypass go through the oil cooler then back through the filter on its way? The slight cutaway in the bypass is probably to allow for any air cavities forming in the oil and controls the amount of oil going through the cooler, ie the pressure differential.

Saaz, when oil returns from the cooler it then goes through the filter, as the connection the other side of the oil filter housing feeds into the filter.

Ok. I have not had a chance to look inside a GSX1100 filter cavity. The small cutout must stop ait cavitation then. The bypass to the cooler will only work if there is a pressure differential, so the small cutout cannot be too big otherwise the oil would not be diverted.

All to hard..I think I will look at Busa articles..or GSX14...etc etc...

Perhaps the small notch is to let the oil cooler drain back into the sump when the motor's not running?

The small cutout has nothing to do with cavitation. Cavitiation is caused by pulling a fluid rather than pushing it (negative pressure). The difference in pressure from one side of the cutout to the other is the same as the difference in pressure across the cooler - very small.

The cutout allows for a small percentage of oil to bypass the cooler and flow directly to the filter - for whatever reason.

Perhaps, it's a safety device for those that remove the cooler on an 1150. At least some oil would flow. Not enough for normal operation, but possibly enough to prevent serious damage - even with the oil light on.

My aftermarket cover just has 2 fittings and mo restrictor. i noticed that after i put a flow controll valve in one of the lines that he cooler worked better.
