1100 Kat with GSXR 4.5" rear wheel

John Kat

Forum Sage
Following the upgrade of my front end, I moved to the rear of my 1135 Kat.
As I wanted to keep the stock swingarm, I opted for the 4.5" wheel from the GSXR 1100 K ( 1989).
The wheel slips right in with 6 mm spacers on eitheir side.
To make sure the sprockets were well aligned, I used a nice laser alignment tool from Germany called Profi Cat (?)http://profi-products.de/en/products/profi-laser-tools/.
On the pictures you will see the laser beam that's projected on the front sprocket that's obviously not aligned.
To get the sprockets aligned, I used a 13 mm offset front sprocket.

Rim looks great back there.
Cool little laser unit. Didn't check to see if they're available in the US, or the price.

Also, don't recognize the shocks either...what brand? Is that a rebound adjuster (black knob) visible in the first pic?

I ordered the laser unit through the internet and I'm sure they ship worldwide.
The shocks are a french brand called EMC.http://www.emc-suspensions.fr/
They are nitrogen charged ( de carbon licence) and the little knob allows you to adjust simultaneously compression and rebound damping.
Definitely better than the Ohlins entry level emulsion shocks for a similar price

Here's the finished bike with GSXR 2nd gen wheels, brakes and front fork.
I took it for a ride yesterday and the feeling is amazing :D
The suspension lost it's harshness while keeping the wheels on the ground and the bike feels much more composed at ( illegal?) speeds:cool:
The other major improvement is of course the brakes!
I can just imagine the smile on one of the Suzuki test pilots if he had had these brakes in those days:rolleyes:
By the way, the engine is an 1135...

Looking good John. Could have done with one of those lasers when I was building the 750!

I had a look but couldn't work out how to buy it from their site.. any tips?

:)

Dont happen to have a part number for those shocks do ya? I had a look through their catalogue and couldn't find anything to fit my kat.

Yes, they don't mention the 1100 Kat but they do mention the 1100 GSX.
I would drop them a note by specifying exactly what you want.
For instance you can get longer than OEM shocks if you want to lift the rear of the bike:cool:
I can call them if you have any difficulty reaching them:)

Hi SM,
Have you looked here: http://www.profi-products.de/shop/en///Profi-SE-CAT-in-aluminum-housing.html
This tool made me discover that the spacer behind the engine sprocket differs between the 1100 and 1150 blocks...
Another proof that the chain is further offset on the 1150s if you remember our previous discussion:rolleyes:

The later fender looks good with the fork. The correct fender for that fork wouldn't have looked as good.

Can you give us the full recipe on the front and rear suspension?

Great looking Kat..

Can we see some pics of the front fender and how you mounted it? Also maybe the a shot of the gauges and triple clamp area?

Thanks!

I have a set of conversion brackets I made up to allow me to use my stock gauges with that fork set up. I've since moved on but I still have the brackets.

Great looking Kat..
I described the front end conversion here:http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=187018
It's been a real pain to extend the front forks as for some reason the inner tube extension started to seize when I took it apart after a blank test.
It proved impossible to refit it without taking it back to the tool and die maker:mad:
He also added a groove to fit an O-ring on the extension tube as the oil would seep out during riding!
I believe the better ( and much cheaper...) solution would be to use a Bandit 1200 front end as the inner tubes are much longer.
Of course you will miss the tuning capability.
For the rear it was quite easy as the GSXR 1100 K wheel with it's drive and disk just slotted in with some extra spacers.
The chain has to be converted to a 530 model with a 13 mm offset drive sprocket.
The rear caliper from the same bike must also be used.
The caliper's reaction bar is attached to the centerstand frame support.
All in all not very complicated but time consuming for sure:rolleyes:
