1150 3.5" wheel in an 1100 swingarm

Dan,
I finally managed to scan my drawing showing the 2 wheels one on top of the other like the one you did using Autocad.
I've aligned the two wheels to the left hand side like you did as the bearings are recessed by the same amount.
As the drawing shows my 3.5" wheel is offset to the right.
As I said since the beginning the wheel needs to be moved LEFT to keep it centered...:D
According to these measurements the 3.5" wheel has to be moved by 68-62= 6 mm left.

2 young kids = not much garage time but this morning I managed to do what you did.

1. My RIM measurements are the same as your (within 0.5mm or so).(111mm & 84mm)

2. My 1150 3.5" Rim measures 6.5mm as shown below.

3. My GS1100 Rim (the exact one in this pic below) meaures 24mm from the reference surface measured the same way.

I didn't have time to pull my GS1000 Rim but this explains our differences...

The question now is why??

One thing I didn't do is measure from the resting surface on the hub down to the bearing face (as you marked 12.5mm above).

From memory it was a little less than that on mine but I will double check asap.

Dan :)

Ok measured again.... 22mm not 24mm.

Dan, we are getting there:)
Your 1150 wheel is offset to the left compared to mine by 6 mm.
The differential in offset between your two wheels is 64-62 = 2 mm to the left.
This means that you would have to move the 1150 wheel to the right by two mm to keep it centered.
Given the accuracy of the measurements you don't need to move it at all, just like Grand Rouge noted in the next post.
It's amazing to see that Suzuki had two types of 1150 wheels?
In reality, I don't know the origin of my wheel as I bought it on ebay from Germany.
Even more strange my other "1150" 3" wheel has the same offset as my 3.5" wheel.
The good news is that we were both right and that anyone who wants to use an 1150 wheel can quickly check if his wheel will be offset or not:D

How long is the gs1100 swingarm (from pivot to the rear axle) ?

Translation...

Wow guys, lots of awesome information in this thread. If anyone here happens to have a swingarm laying around, or took some measurements, I'd really appreciate it if someone could provide me with the length from the pivot to the rear axle. Thanks so much in advance.:D

I don't have a GS 1100 swingarm off a bike but I have a GS 1000 that is!
I believe there are identical from a dimension standpoint as I have exchanged the one for the other without modifying the chain length.
I'll post the measurements later on:)
Pivot to rear axle is 518 mm give or take a few mm.
This is with the axle positionned on the largest marker ( the fourth from the front)
I checked on my GS 1100 swingarm and it's the same.

:D Doesn't make much sense but maybe Suzuki had 2 sources & 2 sets of tooling...

John is your 1150 wheel an Enkei brand same as mine? You can see it in the post with the wheel marks on it...

I know Suzuki definitely had 2 different manufacturers as my 2.15 82 GS850 front wheel is made by a different bunch to my 1.85 78 & 83 rims...

Thanks for looking it up for me John Kat

I'm gonna try to see about cramming one in my GS400.

Dan,
My 3" wheel is also an Enkei...
What's interesting is that there is a marking between one of the spokes and the rim that indicates 84/2.
On your rim, I see 86/10?
Could this be the year and month of manufacturing?
My 3.5" wheel is at my daughter's location so I can't check for the moment.
I'm not an expert on 1150's but I noticed that the cam cover changed at one point in time?
Maybe Suzuki changed many other parts of the bike at the same time???
I will try to check other wheels here in France.
PS: my 3" wheel is color gold that apparently came on the GSX 1100 here in Europe so it's not an 1150 wheel like I thought.
The mystery remains on the 3.5" wheel with respect to it's origin.

Personally, I would be more concerned about the width of the swingarm:o
FYI it's between 223 and 225 mm at the pivot point with the dust covers in place.

I would say that the 86/10 is most likely week & year of manufacture i.e. the 10th week of 1986 so 2nd week in March 1986.

:)

You think it`s wide enough that it will hit the pipes?

I need it to be wider than the stock 400 swigner because I am fitting larger wheel but not wide eought that I cant fit it between both pipes.

It doesn't fit in the frame of the 750 as stock... too wide at the pivot so I'd be surprised if it went in a 400.

W/O narrowing nothing fitsw in a GS400...

Needs 3/8 removed from both sides of the pivot.

I just hope it isnt so wide at the axle that it hits the pipes.

The gs400 swinger is 7 15/16 at the pivot.

hi guys, i hope no one will mind if i add a bit of hijacking to this thread....i have my own going BUT this one has all the info in it, so i am hoping to get this figured out. Just spooned a new rear tire on my es, tck's old bike, and in thoroughly checking things out, i have discovered some....irregularities. This bike, to remind you, has undergone the 1150 rear wheel swap. In putting it back together, i have discovered the rear wheel is offset to the right by, oh, 5 mm or so.

let me see if i understand the first part of saltymonks spacing recipe: a 2mm spacer between the sprocket carrier and the wheel? pushing the wheel (further?) to the right?
You need to add 2mm between the bearing & the sprocket drive spacer on the left side (to push the wheel slightly to the right)
my wheel seems to need to go to the LEFT.

furthermore, if i shift things to the left, it seems that my countersprocket will need to shift left, too, problem is there is VERY LITTLE meat left on the countershaft spline, maybe like 1 mm or so, certainly not the 5mm it needs.

i am sorry i am being dense here, i know all the info is in this thread, i'm just having trouble sorting it all out. thanks in advance!

i will try to get some pics up tonight....

some pics, hard to see, but you can see the wheel is offset to the right quite a bit

and the other side

ok, after reading carefully through this thread, i would say that MY 3.5 inch 1150 wheel is similar to john's, and as such is offset to the RIGHT by about 5mm, from what i can see here his recipe of shaving down the LEFT, drive side spacer and adding the difference to the brake side is correct for me. this is all going by just looking at it with my eyes, not with any real measurements. but, based on what i SEE, this is right. john, i think a pm will be headed your way soon, i am not sure how to deal with the countersprocket needing to move out. i gotta believe i want full engagement of the splines.

incidentally, and just to drag this thread further into hijack mode, i am going to be doing the twinpot mod this winter and am sure to have more annoying questions for you, dan! have my parts collected and ready for cleanup/paint/etc!
