1168 cams gsx1100f /g/ b12

Forum Newbie
Hi everyone, I’m new here and I’m looking for advice on camshafts – I want the bike to deliver smooth and usable power from low rpm all the way to the top.
My setup:
The bike is a GS/GSX750E (1982), but the engine comes from a GS/GSX1100E (1980–83).

Engine mods:

Wiseco 1168 big bore

Mikuni RS36 + K&N

4-into-1 Vance & Hines exhaust

Dyna S ignition

Accel 3 Ohm coils

Dyna rpm limiter

Skimmed head with smoothed ports

Star Racing welded clutch basket (I also have a lock-up MTC Snowflake, but I’m not sure if it’s worth installing)

Available camshafts:

1. GSX1100F (1992)

2. GSX1100G (1991)

3. GSX1100E (1981, stock)

4. GSF1200 Mk1

The GSX-F cams look interesting, but would I lose a lot in the midrange? Or would something else be a better choice?

Pretty sure I remember one of the main differences between the engines on the "G" (shaft model) and the "F" (chain model) was the cams. The cams for the shaft model were designed for more low and mid range power as the shaft dr. usually meant carrying a heavier load and not at max. RPM... Just a thought cam timing plays a big part in where the power is. I found in my "80" GS1100E, 1148 pistons and GS1150 36mm carbs, with cam timing set at 107 for intake and 109 for exhaust it pulled like a freight train. It pulled hard enough in 5th I's pulling up on the shifter and blipping the throttle, now and then to be sure I wasn't in 4th gear. Another thing, back in the day the V&H pipes came with either 2 or 3 restrictors that fit in the collector, the smaller the restrictor the more low end power you kept... I loved the sound of my Yosh pipe but gave up a lot of low end due to their huge collectors, I made a restrictor, designed from what I saw V&H did and got most of the low and mid range back.

Yes gsx-f is the nicest , however # 1,2 and 4 are gsxr type cams little shorter in length than older GSX cams, I have herd of people using them not sure why they would though. My favorite street cam nowadays is the web 310 lift you could go more even 340 they call a gs1150 drop in to me is not optimal on the street, but nice when you get on it. Or find some gs1150 cams D marked for you in the states no need to look for D,you lose the tack drive with 1150 cams they work nice on a 1168 through. Not much out there anymore cam motion G2 were great G3's little more aggressive nice if you can find them. Look at Kent cams in the UK they make most any grind you would want for that old gsx.

hhart Yes, I contacted Kent Cams, but they referred me to SPS, so I’ll try with them. I asked about those camshafts because I already have them at home I got this information from them (check pic), but basically nothing more than that.
I was considering the G3, but they might be a bit too aggressive. As for the G2, nobody ever really mentioned them, maybe it’s worth looking for. Has anyone tested the Yoshimura STL1?
And how does the crankshaft fit into all of this is welding necessary?
rphillips I got similar settings regarding the cam timings — check the pictures. As for the G, you’re right, it should give a lot of power at the bottom, but what about the top end?

Well done,SPS can sort you Nick is the man. Web's 310 lift cam is very much the same as the old G2.

I have put the Yosh stage I cams in my DOT head on my GSX1100 project. But as it's not finished yet (still waiting on suitable carbs) I have no idea how it'll work out. Good luck with whatever you choose.
