anyone done this before, will it fit, will the tire perform ok.

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

It may fit, but I don't think it's a good idea. The rim isn't sized for a tire that wide.

You need a 3.5in rear rim minimum, 4in prefered. A 140 works best with the 3.5in rim.
'85 and '86 GS1150's had the 3.5in rear.

Don't do it for two reasons:
1. The narrow 2.5 inch rim "pinches" the tire, making the contact patch smaller and because the contact patch is smaller the tire will wear a lot faster...you will be changing it out in with only half the mileage you would have gotten out of a 130 tire.
2. Also because of the pinched tire, the transition from vertical to a lean will be more abrupt...not good for handling.
The best way would be to mount a wider rim. A lot more goes into this such as offset front sprocket, possible swingarm change, etc. There have been some guys that were able to mount the 1150 rim with no mods if I'm not mistaken.

I run a 130 on my '79 1000, which has the same width wheel I believe.
I suggest you don't go wider than 130.

I run a 130 on my 82 GS1100...have been told by more than one mechanic to go no wider than that. Mount an 1150 swing arm, or score some early gsxr suspension pieces--pre 92, I believe--I have stuff from an 88 GSXR1100. Front suspension parts are bolt on if you swap out EVERYTHING, but the swing arm requires some small amount of modification.
I just got back from a 140 mi trip, on my "86" GS 1150, with a 3.5" rear wheel, and a 150/80/17 Continental radial. After parking it in the garage, I noticed in the very center of the tire, cords were showing. The wear indicators are slightly offset to the sides, and they are still very visible, with apprx 2/16' of rubber still there. Just an indicator that the 3.5 wheel has pinched the tire enough that the bike is running mostly on a patch between the wear indicators. I had got this tire because I liked it, and the 150 was the smallest size it came in. I'll not be trying this again

haha , i have a 170 on the back of my 81 gs 1100.
but before telling you guys it was ok to mount a big tire on there, i have to say i have a 4.5" gsxr rim. my swingarm is gs 1100 and i'm told the front sprocket had to be offset by 16mm for the chain to align. but since my engine's an 1150 i dont know if that makes a difference.
wider tires don't necessarily provide better cornering or a bigger contact patch, so dont put that 150 on.
i have a 130 on the rear of my 82 1100 which has a stock 1150 rear wheel. no handling complaints (not from the rear anyways)
