Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

1978 GS1000E Fuel Petcock - Conversion?

Folks,

I've done my searching - I know new petcocks are expensive and the K&L rebuild kits are rumored to not work well.

I read on the forum that some people are using a petcock from A GS750 - does anyone know the part # or the model year of the 750 that this petcock came from?

Mine isn't leaking, but after 35 years, I can't assume that it will work forever. My bike has the VM carbs.

From Boulivard Suzuzki parts finder fuel cocks

GS750 44300-45011 82.78
GS1000 44300-44011 267.29

If they were interchangeable the part number would be the same.
I'm not sure of the spacing of the mounting bolts on the 750 vs the 1000.

I know the petcocks are physically different - the vacuum and fuel hose nipples are in different locations.

However, if the fuel and vacuum lines are extended, will a petcock from a 750 work? If so, what year?

PM Chuck Hahn, he has experience in this area, 750 petcocks on 1000's that is.

Well, since it is working, just pull out the handle and replace the disc and the O ring and go from there

As i stated when I replied to his pm...78 and 79 750 petcocks are the exact same body and bolt spacing as the 78 1000 C and Es are. Only thing is the way the nipples face, but the lines hook up without any pinching. And as was stated above...about less than half what a 1000 costs.

A guy sold me an "original" GS 1000 C petcock that looked very similar to the original but...it interfers with the side of the tank:mad:
Could it be a GS 750 petcock?

(NOTE*** it has an incorrect screen for a 1978 model)

Dale...if anyone concerned with the telescopic screen slight difference ( which I havent really noticed it ) they can simply switch it out. Point is that its the same body, same bolt spacing, same drop from the tank bottom and noone would ever know unless they looked at the nipples. And your at half the price too boot.

Here's the petcock I bought thinking it would fit my GS 1000 C:(
Is this the one from a GS 750?
Apparently not from the pictures I've seen.
It sure does interfere with the side of the tank!
In any case this type of petcock is incompatible with the later GS 1000's fitted with BS carbs and original air box...

I haven't seen one of those before, that filter bowl is something I haven't seen on GS petcocks. Last time I saw one that had a filter bowl on it was my '72 CB450 Honda. I actually liked them, instead of collecting crap in the tank, it just settled in the bowl and you took it off and dumped it. Couldn't have been any easier.
I don't think I'd waste my time on it if it's going to damage your tank just to mount it.

The numbers stamped on the side of the housing, should help with it's identification.

You have to be careful that it doesn't clash with the top of the Carburettors. The VM & CV petcocks are a different shape due to that I believe....
