If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey guys, I've been around a long time but don't post very much. Thought I'd share my story and ask a few questions.

Scored this 850 from a friend who pestered me into buying it, finally got it for $180!

So after all the regular tune up, o-rings, tires, clutch and many other things including two new used carb bodies due to broken idle mixture screws plugging the idle circuit, had it running excellent!

Then while having a great ride to the coast this Saturday, it didn't go into 5th gear and I opened the throttle fully while already at 9k rpm. Well it slowed way down and sounded terrible so I shut it down and brought it home with my truck. Found the #2 intake shim out and broken! I'll post more pics...

Here's my cam, does anyone know if there's a better cam option? My research shows the 1000 has the same cam as the 79' 850... at least I have a new bucket... I think the cam timing may be off now as well.

Wow... I wonder if it was because of a loose cam adjustment, a damaged cam lobe or an already cracked shim. Kind of a chicken and the egg thing. New cam, shim and bucket and you should be good to go.

How much clearance are we talking to break one like that? Like .006"?

Did anyone else notice that the broken shim is not a Suzuki shim?

I have a bunch of Kawi and Yami shims and they don't look like that either.
Perhaps it is an under bucket shim? Those, are much smaller in diameter.

Aaaaand that's what the red line is for. :) But hey for a $180 bike, I guess you can afford a top-end rebuild...

No it's not. Shouldn't spit a shim until way way past the red line. Otherwise I would have spit thousands of them. Shim was the wrong size, or the valve clearance was too loose. Maybe both.

Ah it was definitely not the .5mm too small shim. I'm also sure the adjustment was correct. Ya i for sure wanna find the rest of the shim... I've been maintaining and riding gs bikes for years never had this happen but I've heard of it happening!

I have heard that sometimes carbon can build up in such a way that the valve is held open slightly when you rotate the engine by hand. When you adjust the clearance it is a false clearance, it is ony accurate until the chunk of carbon falls out. You get it hot and wind it out, the carbon falls or burns out, now the clearance is much too big. I bet if you put the same size shim back in it's way too loose now.

Well I guess we'll never know now if the clearance was off because the cam and bucket will have to be changed. It was a non runner when I got it, and although I got it to run briefly before I tore into it, I found all four intake valves less than zero clearance... But it does look like clearance opened up, one of the other intake valves was .09mm. I think I have all the parts I need, cam from an 1100G, buckets etc. now if I can just find the rest of the shim...
