    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1979 GS1000L carb passage plugs?

Hello, I have a question regarding my 1979 GS1000L carbs. The bike will idle, but dies when giving it gas. I can occasionally feather the throttle and get it screaming if I'm lucky, but there is no chance of it running at midrange rpm. I figured I would buy a rebuild kit since the air screw looked too worn out, and I noticed that they are suppose to have rubber passage plugs included "according to ebay". I checked out bikeclif's web site and the diagram for the carbs did not list rubber passage plugs. The carbs on it are the vm26ss with the narrow dome tops and 28mm or so intakes. My carbs did not have rubber passage plugs in them when I took them apart. Is the bike running bad because the plugs are missing, or the air screw is corroded and worn out? I already checked for air leaks with starting fluid and even a propane torch "not igniting it obviously". Should I get a carb kit or just plugs and o-ring kit. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated to save me time and money.
 
Thanks for the link I will need it when reassembling my carbs. Those are the same carbs I have, but they are for a 77 GS750 not my 79 GS1000, so I wonder if there is a difference. That makes the second diagram I have found that does not list passage plugs. I am confused since I can buy passage plugs for a 79 GS1000. Does anyone know without a doubt if my 1979 GS1000L is support to have passage plugs or not?
 
What is a "passage plug", and where did you see that they are available for a "79 GS1000"?
 
From what I could find the passage plug is a black rubber plug that goes on the bottom of the pilot jet. This allows gas to enter the pilot from between the main jet and pilot so that it can meter the low idle circuit, so it will not run rich "I think". This is what I think my carbs are missing. I have found a carb kit on ebay and contacted the seller, because the passage plug was not listed in the parts description. He said that the carb rebuild kit does come with rubber passage plugs. Is this correct or did he mistake the older 78-79 GS1000 carbs with the larger ones with flat tops on the early 80s bikes.

Those plugs are for the later BS carbs. Your pilot jets are 'unplugged' and the rebuild tutorial for the 750 VM carbs works spot on for your 1k carbs
 
Thanks for the quick replies. Now I know the carbs are not equipped with passage plugs. I might try to boil them with water and lemon juice before I try a repair kit. I have a wedding coming up soon to pay for and can't get caught spending too much money.:-$ Any tips on do and do not with this? I used carb cleaner and an air compressor, but should have invested a little more time with a wire pick.
 
DO NOT buy those repair kits,. Waste of money!
