A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok so here it goes, I got my carbs all straightened out and shes running good but I seem to have a problem. When shes at a hot idle I can hear a knocking sounds but it doesnt do it every revolution. So what could it be? It makes two knocks then stops for one second then two knocks and then stops for a second and it keeps doin that while its at idle. What could it be??

Cam Chain?

Cam Chain?

Might be a tight spot in your cam chain, my old 750c made a noise like that it's whole life, I think now, later, affecting it's so-so power availability. Never let me down, tho-broke my heart when my son totalled it:mad:.

maybe post a you tube video with sound and it will be clearer as to what you are hearing..

Assuming the carbs are in sync, sounds like it may be a classic example of a knock caused by camshaft end float.

It's fairly common on early 850s and 750s, and it's completely harmless.

The fix is rather involved, and again, the noise is harmless, but here is it anyway.:

Yep, goin' with bwringer on this one. If it goes away by the time you get the engine up to about 1500 rpm, it's likely cam end float.

My wife's bike came with that 'feature' already installed, still runs well over 20,000 miles later. Nothing to worry about.

.

i bet it's the clutch basket loose springs quandary that is so common
not the cam end float

Mine does the same thing. Rpm's over 1500 and it goes away. I'm dealing with it considering what the fix would be.

I have no clue whats wrong with your bike so I'll just sip my beer and agree with bwringer and steve.

Hi,

If it is cam end float, I've heard here that installing your half moons backwards might quiet down the engine at idle. Some like installing them backwards anyway just so they don't pop out and make a mess.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
