It seems like there is gas getting down into the oil....is this because I just had a bottle with a hose running gas into the carbs without any kind of valve or is there an internal carb problem.....I took them apart and cleaned them and replaced all orings

It's possible the float valves or whatever they're called are not working as intended, but I'd expect it's more likely the temporary fuel tank setup.

If you leave the bottle there long enough fuel will eventually force it's way in, and if you have the bottle too high then I'm pretty sure the extra pressure from gravity will make it a bit worse.

thats what i was thinking but wasnt sure...

i also came to realize while staring at a carb diagram this morning ...that my carbs are missing the springs on the air/fuel mixture screws.......and also they seem to be a discontinued item so i guess the search is on to find a used one...

i found the springs from my local dealer for four bucks apiece......:D..i also ordered a shim tool as well..

i also received my metric feeler gauge today....i found three valves to be at .03 mm and the intake valve on the left cylinder to be smaller than .02 mm......so im thinking that might be part of the problem of the left cylinder running a lot colder than the left????.

why would it be tighter than spec????can they tighten up or maybe it was to tight from factory??

Good score on the springs!

The wear that happens with the valves is the valves wearing into the valve seats, meaning the end of the valve actually gets closer to the cam lobe, so therefore the clearances decrease when wearing.

If they get too small a clearance, there's a risk they'll open too early and shut too late, and may even get held open a touch which affects compression also.

well this sucks.....the dealership called and said those springs have been discontinued...so i guess the search for used ones goes on...

thanx pete...sent a request to him...but also am eyeing a 99% complete 78 gs400 for a parts/part out bike for $100....i just need to get the money together...

Edit: i found a used set on ebay for 20 bucks for the springs and screws....so i got them for now....still hoping to get the other bike though

Good score on the eBay ones, but yes, parts bikes are always handy... I was fortunate enough that my bike was 100% complete.

so over the last day or two i have received the valve shim tool, the fuel/air mixture screw springs , the clutch cable, and both throttle cables that i had ordered.....now i just need to get that spare time that i ordered...:D

i also removed the valve shim that needed adjusted and am in the process of getting a smaller one......

hopefully i can spend some time on it this weekend and wrap up a few areas on it....

Mate that sounds promising! Time is always the hardest bit though...

Just in case you aren't aware, don't rotate the engine with that shim out...

Thanx for the heads up Pete.....I made sure not to do that:D

I drained the fork oil and it was pretty nasty looking....the manual says the tighter coiled end should be at the bottom...on mine it was at the top...

Yeah that pipe's nice... I like it!

I've got 15w oil in my forks and so far so good, although contemplating putting 20w in at some point to see how that goes. The Ikon fork springs have made a huge difference though.

What do you guys think....is this worth a hundred bucks.....its a 78 gs400. With no title...

I had a very productive evening due to the wife having a friend over that she hasn't seen in a while so that gave me some garage time :)
I got the valves adjusted right... .06 .05 .04 .04 so I was pretty happy with that...also got the valve and breather covers installed....both with new gaskets....

Nice progress! Not long now right? Or still a way to go?

As for the 400, $100 sounds good for a parts bike, not sure how easy/hard it is for you to get a title or even if that matters... as a parts bike I reckon it won't make a difference...

no not very far....basically hooking up the other throttle cable....adjusting all the cables....putting the fork springs back in and filling the fluid back up....tightening a few bolts.....then its time to start tuning it.....after that its just finishing the body work on the tank and painting the plastic body pieces....

it will be solely a parts/part out bike....so no title needed...
