If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey guys just finally rebuilt my old 1982 gs850l shes a beaut. she runs great but the only problem i have left is, when i romp on the throttle and try to bring her past 5k-6k rpms its almost like bike is red-lining, and wont go any higher, its just stuck, and you can hear the engine making a red-line like noise. I already went through the carbs but i wouldnt rule them out. So what do you guys think? could it be a valve issues? thanks everyone.

," and you can hear the engine making a red-line like noise. "

what does this sound like? And what did your rebuilding involve? Did you check valve clearances and cam to crank timing while you were at it?

Are you sure your tachometer is working?

This was the problem for my '83 GS850L - The Tach was way off - I was screaming along and it only would read 6K ---?
A new Tach fixed that (but it took me 2 tries to source one that worked properly)

Thanks Guys i will check all of the above! wont see the bike for about a month back at school but ill send you guys and update!! thanks again

Did you repack the exhaust?. I did mine a few weeks ago and over did it. Thing would not rev past 5k.

Did not know that could happen. I pack mine using absolutely as much pack as I can get in there. I have to use a mallet to get the cap back on. Never noticed any rpm issues but maybe mine is different because of the old slide carbs.

I had that on a 1000G - Was the ignitor. A Dyna S fixed it.... You have the electronic advance on the 82 though I think. Not sure if you can re-fit the mechanical advance to that model otherwise you'll need a Dyna 2000 or one of the other equivalents. :)

Looking at your film clip it looks to me your tacho is not working

.sounds like she is reving well.

Try a different tacho from fleabay maybe . before you over rev it!!

I just watched your video, there is no way you were doing 80 mph at 4 grand, replace your tac.

Whatcha guys think about the CDI box? and whats repacking the exhaust never heard of that before. Im currently getting a carb kit to just run completely through them, start simple before i start ripping the thing apart.

Also when i was researching the bike, it says the main jet size was #115, but when i took the carbs apart they were all #112.5, but i think i remember when i bought the bike off the guy he said he swapped carbs to see if that was the problem but it kept happening?

Yep, 82 GS850 should have had 115 mains. Sounds like you have carbs from a GS750. Good chance the needle and needle jets are wrong as well. Sounds like you're going to need to inventory everything in those carbs. If you find the need, I do have a complete set of parts(mains, needles, needle jet, Pilot jets for an 82 GS850. PM me if you do need them.

yeah thats definitely possible so i have a complete carb kit for an 850, you think i could convert it to an 850 set up or should i start looking for new carbs?
