1983 GS1100 emissions sticker needed

All,

Like the subject line says….

In order to import a 1983 GS1100 into the People’s Republic of California, the bike has to have the original emissions decal attached. I’ve searched and can’t find an online source (I did find a 1982 decal in Canada but need the 1983 version).

Does anybody have a source where one can be had? Failing that, can somebody upload high-res photos of a 1983 GS1100 emissions decal? I have a friend with a decal business who could reproduce one for me if he had good images to work from.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks! Yes I independently stumbled across Brian previously. He told me he had a 1982 sticker but no 1983. So I need good images of the 1983 sticker to proceed. Surely somebody here owns a 1983 GS1100, of any tyoe?

I was working with a guy on eBay to reproduce a VIN tag. He does custom made decals to order. Might be worth checking if he has this one already. Jerry's Z50 Stuff - User name - jrure.

Thanks very much for that! I have reached out to him.

At this point it seems I need good images of a 1983 GS1100 emissions sticker for somebody to duplicate. Does anybody here have a GS1100 and could you please upload images of the emissions sticker? Thanks!

Surely no one at the DMV will know the difference between a 82 and a 83 emission sticker. Just change the date.

Well, the model year is printed right on the sticker. One would hope they would not look too closely, and a 1982 sticker might sneak through. But hope is not a strategy, as they say. I have a friend lined up to reproduce a 1983 sticker for me, but I need good images and dimensions to work from. Surely somebody can lift their seat and take a few pics and post them here?

I have an '83 GS1100E, but I don't think there is an emission sticker on it.

Where would it be stuck, this sticker?

Here are photos of the sticker from my 1980 GS1000S. They are always located under the seat. Some manufacturers put them on the seat itself but most seem to put them on the inner fender as seen here.

IMG_4168.jpg Here is a closeup of the sticker. Note that it has the specific model year at the bottom, so I need a 1983 sticker. Several images from slightly different angles can be combined to make a great reproduction. Also please provide the measurements.

THANKS!

PS it is SO stupid that the California DMV will not let you register a vehicle purchased out of state unless it has the factory emissions sticker still attached. Infuriating!

Apparently I can't help you. The sticker on my rear fender is from a GS750E, which is where I got the fender from. There is no stickers under my seat.

Good luck!

Ah rats, a swing and a miss!

Surely there must be somebody else here with any sort of 1983 GS1100 that still has its sticker?

What is the mileage? If over 7500 then not an issue... Below from Google. If not.. get a clock that has that many miles on it.

Based on California DMV regulations, a 1983 Suzuki GS1100 generally does not require a smog check to be registered, as smog inspections are currently only mandatory for motorcycles manufactured in 1975 or older.

However, if you are bringing the 1983 motorcycle into California from another state, you face specific, strict requirements regarding its classification as a "new" or "used" vehicle.
Key Requirements for a 1983 Motorcycle in California
  • Emissions Sticker (If < 7,500 miles): If the 1983 GS1100 has less than 7,500 miles on the odometer when you bring it into California, it is considered a "new" vehicle by the DMV, even though it is over 40 years old. To register it, it must have a label on the frame certifying it meets California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards.
  • 7,500+ Mile Exemption: If the motorcycle has 7,500 miles or more, it is considered "used," and you can register it even if it only has a federal EPA sticker or no sticker at all.
  • Verification (REG 31): The DMV will verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to confirm the mileage and compliance.
  • Missing Sticker: If the sticker is missing, worn off, or the bike is a 49-state model (not 50-state/California compliant), you may have significant difficulty registering it if the mileage is under 7,500.

Hey that’s brilliant! I never would have thought to look in the owners manual for a copy of the sticker. Sadly I don’t have the manual either, but that would actually be a better source than trying to adapt the curved sticker on a bike itself.

So, can anybody post a good photo of the relevant page in any 1983 GS1100 owners manual? It should be on page 20-something.

We are getting warmer!

Interesting about the 7500 mile exemption. The last two bikes I brought in both had 20k plus miles and the DMV insisted on seeing the sticker. I didn’t know the rule with the first one, and said I didn’t think it was there, before I looked and found it. While I was removing the seat, the DMV drone said it would be a hard no without it. This at least gives me hope. Of course, a pic of the decal, either from a bike or a manual, would solve my problem for sure.

Thanks for the word about the exemption. I will attempt to educate the DMV worker if necessary, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that….
