    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1983 GS1100E - 530 Gearing for More Low End?

I'm interested in trying to get some more low end torque out of my GS1100. Converted to 530 before a long road trip, kept the gearing stock. At 65 mph she purrs along at ~4k rpms. She's got endless headroom that I can't use...

Now that I'm settled again at home and doing mostly street and cruising highway 1, I want a little more umf.

I've read a few ratio threads and they get pretty in-depth, seem to be slated towards the dragster crowd. I'm not looking to race. I just want a nice compromise between low end torque and comfortable highway cruising.

Any suggestions?
 
A good compromise is to go 3 teeth up in the back. Going 1 smaller in the front is about the same change but isn't good for the chain to give it a sharper bend to make. Also, it is good for the "stock is best" guys to stay out of the Performance & Mods section since they rarely seem to have anything good to add.

Right on. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm running a 50T right now (I think...). I'll give 47 a shot, see what it feels like.
 
Could always do 3 up on the back as said above then if you still need more then drop one one the front. I've done +3/-1 on plenty of 1000cc supersport bikes and a 180mph bike will generally then bounce revs at around 160

going the wrong way son !!! ....47t you are gearing the bike up.... if you want umf you need gear the bike down 53-54t will get you what you want

What size is your counter shaft sprocket if your running a 50T rear?
You would need to be running a 18T counter shaft sprocket to keep it close to stock gearing so you could easily go to a 17T or 16T on a 530 chain as the GSXR1100 came with a 15T counter shaft
sprocket and it is not to tight of a bend for a 530 chain. In the 530 set up the closest gearing to stock GS1100/1150 is 17T front and 48T rear. I would suggest you go one tooth smaller on the front and see how you like it. especially if you have a 18T counter shaft sprocket on it now.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I'll probably try a -1 front to start and order a +2 rear at the same time. If the -1 isn't enough, I'll throw the +2 on.

Hmmm...I have the same bike and can't imagine wanting more bottom end. Mine does roll on wheelies as it is. I did go to the 530 conversion but kept the ratio the same as stock. But then again I do lots of high speed riding and like the rpm the way they are...

Ray just texted me that he got slammed for his comment. It could have been more tactfully worded mind you, but I don't have a problem with what he said. I did not report him.
 
Wow..he got blocked for that?? It was a little obnoxious that's for sure and uncalled for. Not sure if blocking him is right but the rules are not mine.:confused:
 
Supersprox,makes custom lightweight 530 rear sprockets.Cost more than Z1 but a lot lighter. Ray was just expressing his opinion,I havent seen a politically correct forum yet. Try the ZRX forum I am on.......:)

He seems to me to be one of the more knowledgeable (drag) racers here, and I always figured racers were the most skilled mechanics.

Personally, I'm not comfortable wearing a skirt and high heels when I work on vehicles. :xsmilie_mrgreen:
 
I agree with Trevor, I can't imagine a 16 valve GS1100 lacking torque. I would think there is something not right with the motor.
 
ride an 1150 and you'll think the 1100 had a plug wire fall off :D

Moving from my 750EX to a first ride on the 1100ED was pretty exciting when I first opened it up. But after I had some miles under my belt on the open road, and then dropped-in (:)) the 1166 is really nice. Where I used to have to down shift from 5th to 4th to get passing acceleration, now it is the same with just a small twist of the throttle.
