bike looks good. You work fast.
A girl that wrenches, yes please.
If you need a carb dip alternative, try purple power. Works great, cheaper, more enviro-friendly.

Thanks! But me working fast? To be honest I'm slow. It's just that I have nothing else to do .

The pod filters got here.

Installed on all 4 carbs.

Tried to start the bike and this is what happens.

It doesn't start! I had it running with the t-shirt thingy a few days ago. The starter cranks the engine over but there is no sign of it firing. Spark is good on all 4 plugs, fuel gets to all 4 cylinders, compression is good on all 4. Battery measures 12.74v resting and 11.09v cranking with headlight on.

I think the valves are tight but I don't know how to adjust the valves :(.

Just read through the article on BassCliff's site for adjusting 16 valve engines. No shims! :)

I've only done a valve adjustment once in my whole life and that was with a Chevy 350 small block. This is how I did it. Pulled one valve cover off. Start the engine. Tighten the valves until I heard it hit the pistons. Then loosened it until I did not hear the sound anymore. Repeat with all other valves.

I guess that way won't work with the GS1100 engine, huh?

Now I'm browsing eBay for some metric feeler gauges.

Allen,

No need for metric feeler gauges. Just adjust to between 3 and 5 thousandths of an inch. It helps to have two sets of feeler gauges so you can out one under each follower finger to get a more accurate reading. If you really want to make the job easy get some Motion Pro Tappet Feeler Gauges and Tappet Tool Set. The job can be done easily enough using regular feeler gauges and wrenches but the Motion Pro stuff makes it a real breeze.

Thanks Joe! I was looking at that Tappet set but noticed the price. $40.....

I'm just going to use wrenches and that home made tool. Look! I already found a screw with a square that fits perfectly on the valves :).

Everything appears to be in good shape. The top end oiler is confirmed to be working. I did borrow a set of metric feeler gauges from my neighbor and the smallest one did not even fit under the valves! I followed all instructions in the guide and even the cam shaft location mark thingy.

I measured under that thingy. Yeah... Don't know what it's called lol. Under the thing that makes contact with the valve and pushes it down.

The valves are tight as I thought. That would explain the hard starting.

I'm looking for a wooden dowel or something to stick the screw onto.

And I gave the feeler gauges back haha! Said that I would only borrow it for an hour.

So I need my own. This should work right?

Sears should be open til 9. I bought a set of Craftsman valve feeler gauges that have both metric and standard measurements on them...

Let's see, Oreilly's, Autozone (they'll let you borrow a set), Napa, HF (Gasp), etc.
Oh yeah! But I already ordered some feeler gauges. This was the only one I could find that measures between that low! (I need the .003-.005")/

3/8" wooden dowel.

And I already have some square drive screws.

And a bit off topic, I WANT THESE WHEELS!!! Astralites! It would match my black engine casings with SS bolts so well.

Whom needs a wooden dowel? just cut the screw length so it's long enough to be useful and file it down so it's square, use a shifter to get a bit of accuracy, then worry about getting a dowel, drilling the centre out and epoxying it in later on.

Damn. I could have done that. But I already ordered a dowel. Should be here next week. It's OK. I will be busy the whole weekend anyways so waiting is not a problem!

Oh, and believe it or not, I didn't have a 9mm combo wrench . Ordered that too. Yeah, I'm too lazy to go to the store so I order everything .

Ugh... My stupid friend didn't sign out of his Youtube account .

Anyways, did you notice that the starter is working pretty hard to turn crank the engine over? I will charge the battery.

Again, all 4 plugs have nice spark, wet and smells of gasoline after cranking, good compression.

So here's my plan. Charge the battery and then adjust the valves. See if that does anything :).

EDIT: ****! I ordered the blade style instead of tappet style :(

"Cam Lobe" would be the term you were looking for in that post above instead of the "thingy that pushes valves down" ;)

Great work, hope it starts right up when you adjust the valves

Don't waste your money on SAE feeler gauges that have metric equivalents. Get dedicated metric feeler gauges and be done with it. I have been adjusting valves using feeler gauges since (well, longer than you have been breathing) and there is no comparison, especially on a (relatively) high performance and high revving engine.
Do it right, do it once. And on this one, this is not JMHO; anyone who has done lots of valve adjustments (especially if you have done both SAE and metric like I have) knows metric is the only way to go for a metric engine. They are exactly correct, i.e. 0.005 mm, just as SAE are exact, i.e. 0.035 in.
