  • Returning Visitors

Hahaha cheers mate! Hate to disappoint though... had to work last night so nothing done unfortunately. Getting close to Christmas so I can see less productivity for a bit but I'll keep plodding away as I get time.

I found I have enough 0.8mm thick aluminium sheet to make the battery box and I'm off work next week so should be able to get the rest of the aluminium to make the inner guard and tray as well. I also hope to get a set of steering head bearings which will take me one step closer to being able to fully assemble a roller.
 
Yep. I, too, following along on a daily basis, Pete. Really enjoying watching you bring this project along. Lookin' good, man...:)
 
I love all the storage possibilities you are opening up under the seat too. I used the old air filter box and just plugged the bottom hole and opened the top more so I could put insurance gloves, smokes etc, as I was desperate for storage and there is just nothing on these.

I do have some but I haven't started the rebuild thread yet because there really isn't anything to report but here is an old one from when I first got it and painted it, and one after sitting for 12 years. its finally coming home to be redone again.

And Weapon, thanks for the pic's! Good to see she's coming home, will definitely have to tune into the rebuild thread when you get started. I have the same storage issues on the 450 and I've ended up with a top box on the back. That won't quite work on the Kat though...

No further progress at the moment I'm afraid. I couldn't get motivated last night but I do need to get in and draw out the battery box on the aluminium so I can cut and bend it.

I did however download some software that's been recommended to draw up a wiring diagram. I'm definitely going a custom harness on this one as there will be enough changes that a stock harness will need quite a bit of hacking to work. I'd really like to make it as neat as possible too.
 
While it's not really progress as such, I took all the electrical bits out to the shed to test fit last night and see how much room I do/don't have in the tray.



Not quite enough to fit the starter relay in there, but at least I can fit the rest and have room for a coil relay. That relay there is a 20A mini relay from Eastern Beaver. I use 3 of those on the 450 for coil and headlight relays and I may end up getting more for the Kat as they're an extremely handy size for a bike.

I may also not use the stock fuse box yet either as I may end up needing more than 5 circuits. Haven't gotten anywhere near that far with working out a wiring diagram yet.

Here's what I'm thinking for the starter relay, and the SH775 is a lot larger than the SH535 in this photo but there is still plenty of room for it:



A little more exposed than I like but still reasonably hidden under there.
 
Well I haven't really progressed the Kat at all during my time off but I have at least gotten a bit more of the shed done. Insulation and walls are getting close.





And Santa was kind... impact wrench, genuine Kat footpegs, and Chinese clip ons (37mm high rise). Only potential issue could be that the pegs are non-folding but hopefully not. I need to get the mounting bushes for them too but Mick Hone has them available.

 
Partly to keep cool and partly for noise. The shed's pretty close to the neighbours and our bedroom so trying to do what I can to keep it quiet if I'm in there at night.

The white definitely improves the lighting too! Will be even better once the rest of the walls and the ceiling is done.
 
Pete, don't the front pegs fold? Are they original and did you get them from Mic Hone? I am starting to build a parts list for our bikes, can still get the front pegs but the rear pegs (metal part) are no longer available. I think I will be looking for some good second hand products from the US. Still have not located my missing zinc plated parts :(
 
those look like 81 pegs. I personally prefer the newer style that are aluminum with a rubber cover. I think those will still fit though unlike the gs e between 82 83.
 
Bugger Ged, was hoping whoever has your bits would come through by now!

The pegs don't fold and as Weapon says they're likely from the earlier Kats... got them from eBay rather than Mick Hone and I suspect they're also from an import Kat rather than a local one which is likely why they don't fold.

One of the other guys has non folding rear sets and got a safety certificate with them on as the engine cases are wider than the pegs, so they said it wasn't an issue for rego. I'm hoping the same applies with these...
 
Get a sheet of ply or insulation board, hold it against the bottoms of the tyres and tip it against the side of the bike to see what touches first. Fixed pegs - fail; although it's worth pointing out I had a bike with fixed pegs that were definitely factory and most certainly stuck out the farthest - an MZ250 - yet it passed MOTs no problem, and I'm fairly sure it was a testable item, but I can't be certain, as it might have been a later reg.

A motorbike must be fitted with foot rests for the driver, and for any passenger for whom a seating position is provided.

Should all be good........................Doesn't say anything about fixed pegs.
 
Cheers guys... I'm pretty sure they'll be fine... as for leaning... if I'm that close to touching the pegs I'm already crashing :D
 
I think original Katana foot pegs are too far forward, the handle bars are quite a stretch, round town its heavy on the wrists, for me, I found using the rear pegs a bit too far back and on fast bends flat out it brought on a weave, the thing about the Kats that I've found is that the faster you go the more 'planted' and positive it feels. feet on the front pegs and the unsettling weave didn't come on but the eighties foot underneath position just doesn't feel right with me.

I know what you're saying tatu, although so far the few rides I've had on a Kat with stock pegs and 'bars I haven't felt that. Depends a lot on the individual too, although having said that I spend most of my time with my toes on the pegs which definitely helps. That's a habit from the low/forward pegs on the 450.
