    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

#3 and #4 cylinders cold

I'm new to this forum, and could use a little help--I'm pretty green, so bear with me. just bought a 1980 GS850 and I've discovered the #3 and #4 exhaust are cold, however it's slightly intermittent. sometimes they'll be hot even after a 5 minute idle, but then I'll go for a ride and 20 minutes later they're cold...other times they're cold after idling and heat up after the ride--or not at all.

I replaced the plugs, and I know I'm getting spark. I'm thinking I just need to clean the carbs. Thoughts? If it's just a carb clean, should I do a carb rebuild in the process?

My other thought was that I should replace the intake boots and the airbox boots...maybe they're leaking??? the previous owner used some kind of silicone around them, which seems to be a tell.

I appreciate any advice I can get, thanks.
 
I’d do a full rebuild following the procedures linked in the GSR homepage. Get an O-ring kit from cycleorings.com and get intake boot O-rings at minimum (if your bike has them that is). If the boots are hard and cracked, replace them as well. While you are at it I’d do a valve adjustment unless you know for a fact that they have been properly adjusted within the last 4000 miles. Do the carb cleaning shown on Bike cliff's site, you don't need a rebuild kit, just get some new O rings and possibly float bowl gaskets.

Adjust your valve clearances also. It will run like it did thirty years ago.

Yes, your carbs should be dipped and rebuilt. Use this.

Carb clean as noted, plus replace anything that has silicone on it

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how it runs on all 4 cylinders
 
thanks for the advice. I'll definitely re-do the carbs and check the valve clearances. Don-lo, why add coolant to #1 and 2 pipes? what does that do?

Cools them. It was a joke. At your expense. I would advise getting revenge.
 
I should have picked up on that as a joke...shame on me.
Well I pulled the carbs out today and will give them a good clean. I found that the previous owner had put a left side intake boot on the #4 intake. Will this create leakage? I would think so because it's backwards...
 
Sorry, I thought the snickery face (:D) would show it was a joke.

but seriously, folks...., this problem could also be caused by #3 & 4 plug wires being switched, although it would run real bad.
