    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

You would definitely reduce available fork travel, without adding any extra stiffness. I think you could bottom out your suspension quite often.

The front suspension on my 500 is real soft. I haven't gotten around to upgrading it, and I can assure you that it sucks when your front bottoms out.
 
I like the idea of just raising the fork up a bit. You could always use thicker oil or add more pressure to the air shocks to counteract it, and might even end up with better handling in the process.
 
I will see how much preload travel I currently have on the front suspension and then see how much difference there is between preload and bottoming out. I just havent had any issues with it bottoming out - if anything it is too soft and has way to much travel.

If there is enough travel remaining between the two, I do not see how there could be a problem cutting the distance in half and removing that much of the spring. Cutting the spring should not effect the original spring weight - should it?

What you mean apart from de-tempering the spring??
Call progressive and buy a new shorter spring instead!!! best of both worlds better suspension control and lower ride height.

Spring constants are spring constants regardless of length. But the amount of spring compression is directly related to how long your spring is.

If you want to cut your springs, go for it. I don't think that is the greatest solution to your problem, but I suspect the worst that could happen is you ruin your ride for a while till you track down new/correct springs.
 
springrate is the tortional module for steel (11,250,000) times the wire diameter in inches cubed all divided by 8 times the number of coils times the mean coil diameter in inches.

so with that said, if you decrease the number of coils total it will increase the springrate of the entire spring.

not enough to compensate for the travel lost.
 
I agree, but the spring rate greatly increases when the coils are touching :D

I can't wait to cafe out another zuki....right now I just started building a Yamaha XS650.... too bad this is a only "GS" forum.....lol...cause just from looking at the xs and the way it sits...it should turn out to be an awsome Cafe Racer!! and I'm sure I'd get flamed and maybe even booted for even talking about a Yamaha....LOL :-D

I was doing some tinkering and decided to take a short video walkaround of the bike. And it is an excuse to play with youtube.

My love of things two wheeled also includes bicycles. I have been riding road bikes for quite a few years. The riding position on my pedal bikes is very similar to the position on the motorbikes. The result is that my back/wrists/arms are in pretty good shape. Not trying to brag, just saying that my body is pretty conditioned to riding for extended periods of time in that position. I also find that the angle of the grips on the clubmans is the same angle that my fists naturally fall into when I extend my arms, so they are very comfortable.

The only issue with that position is the foot pegs. Moving my feet back would make the ride a little more comfortable. I am thinking about a couple of solutions. The main problem is that I really like having the kicker, and a lot of my thoughts so far get in the way of that. So know I am faced with the added task of modifying the kicker.

As for now, when I ride and I am in a good gear, I just move my feet to the passenger pegs and it feels great.
 
You could install some rearsets which would both move your feet back.


Cut some steel plate into the correct triangular shape, then drill and tap the plate for the mounting bolts. Weld the plate to the frame. Then install GSXR rearsets. See the photo below for an example. Would let you retain the kickstand as well.

What are the clamps for the headlight there? I absolutely NEED to have/make those.

I should have been more clear. Not kickstand, kickstart. Those rearsets would get in the way of the kickstart. I am thinking about trying a shorter kickstart lever, I don't think it would increase effort that much.

Where exactly is the kickstarter? Don't think I've seen a pic of a GS with one.
