76 KZ 650B1 ( AMF auction bike ) part 2

Cant sling any color till the decal kit shows up. If not next week it will for sure be here the following week at some point. Just in a holding pattern right now.

Chuck,

I like to lay down the color and two layers of clear before decals. Scuff with a gray scotchbrite and then lay down the decals, followed by more clear. Works perfectly.

Thats what my buddy who manages the paint store said. But still need to wait on decals due to the time period before the paint closes. If I do it before the 24 hrs time frame expires I wont have to sand the clear. least thats my theory on it. Do the clear, lay the decals, then lay more clear over top.

Chuck,
Sanding the clear and then applying the decals will assure your final clear layers will go down on a perfectly flat surface which improves clear coat smoothness.

You don't need to hurry either. Once the base coat is sealed over you can take your time before the final clear. Some guys recommend allowing the decals to out gas for a day before clearing.

Reproduction decals sent me the long awaited decals today and they look sweet. Paint coming this weekend so I know what I will be doing!!!

Used Ebay front brake lines came today and they are installed and I now have front stoppage. Put the speedo cable on too. I found a place in OKC that claim if I bring the old lines in they can copy them. I now have a set of clogged up ones that I will be taking to them and see how they do. If they can make them with DOT plain rubber then I will have a source for anything that comes my way.

Got 200 dollars worth of stuff ordered today. Gonna place an order with Z1 next week and all the parts should be ordered finally. Last will be new tires.

What kind of tires are you going to get Chuck? Shinkos are the best bang for the buck, but I've always said, nothing looks better than an old classic Kawasaki with RWL tires! I bet you could find Bridgestones in that size in RWL, but probably not the Dunlops. Either tire is good for the kind of riding we do!

+1 Don't get hurried, Chuck. Spray your base, toss on a couple 2-3 coats of clear..and let it set for a couple of days before sanding the clear with (what I recommend) wet 600 grit. The decals will lay down so much better..then give those..another 24 hrs. to gas off before spraying the final coats of clear. Time is your friend at this stage, man.

I got home today and had lots of daylight left. Shot the tank and body panels. Let them dry almost 4 hrs and just got done wet sanding everything in preparation for the second silver base coat. Slow and patiently is my game plan. If all goes well by tomorrow evening, I will have some silver base coat pics to share.

I have them on the 78 1000C and they ride very well, and i like the more "vintage" tread patterns.

I get ya', I understand the vintage pattern thing. What tire would that have come with from the factory?

If I remember correctly, the Kawasaki's of that vintage generally were fitted with Dunlop "golden seal" type tires! I actually have a set on a ZL900 parts bike, they were still using those tires in 1985. I see them pop up on eBay now and again, but I don't know that I would want a tire that old for a bike I was riding. I'm really sold on Shinkos for the bikes I ride, good performance and relatively cheap. I still love the looks of the RWL's too!!!!
