78 750 vin# confusion. is there a difference between the engine on a E,EC,C model?

so the frame on my 78 gs750 says it was manufactured in may of 78, frame vin # is gs750E 25143.... the engine vin# is gs750 69950... I did a search on GSR for vin# and found a link that basscliff posted to a german site, but my german's a little rusty soooo....I'm still not sure... How did suzuki denote the model in their vins? does the E on the frame# mean it's an GS750E? If it were an EC would it say that on the frame? or are all 78's C models and if there's an E, that means it's an EC? also, if there's no "E" after the model in the engine # does that mean that the engine isn't an "E" or "EC" ??? Also, since they didn't match the frame and engine #'s, is there a way to tell if it is the original engine on the bike? Was there a difference in engine parts on the C, EC, E or the LMNOPQRST???? I just wanna order the right parts so I can get to work....

If you have cast wheels, dual front disc, and a stepped seat, you have an E. Numbers on motor dont match the frame.

The E is the better model. Its either a GS750 or a GS750E in 78.

The other letters designate the year

B-77
C-78
N-79

No way to know your original engine number, you may see wrench marks on the motor mount bolts if it's been changed out.
Pre 1980 750 engines are all the same, except the carbs are slightly different on the earliest 750s.

I have a feeling that you may not have the original engine in that frame. As stated they do not match up the frame and motor. They grab a motor from the motor warehouse and a frame from the frame warehouse and lump them together, so it is not unusual for the numbers to be out by a couple of thousand, but not by 44,000, that seems a bit much to me.

Although it may be possible if an older frame was lying around and they put a much newer motor into it. Check with other people on the site that have the same model, '78 750 and see what their engine numbers are compared to yours.

For a 1979 model. Whether it's original motor???

My carbs are also jetted standard for that year.

As stated however, engine the same for 77(76?)-79.

Just went to the gargage and checked both of my 78s. there is no E in the engine numbers on either one ( GS750-XXXX) there is a E in the vin though (GS750EXXXX) The chart on ozebook.com says that the first VIN issued for 78 GS 750Es was 10019 and the first ENGINE number was 44144. This would mean that your bike was the 15,124th built. E, C, N.. its all the same engine. And by the way these ARE the original engines in my bikes..so no there wont be an E in the engine numbers.

ok, that answers my question. Thanks guys. I don't care if I have the original engine, so much as I just don't want to waste time ordering parts just to find out they don't fit. If the engine is exactly the same between the 750 and the 750E and between the years, sounds like I'm good.

Chuck is bang ref the numbers in with his reply. As for the engine, if it's an 8 valve GS750 then it's an 8 valve GS750 - they're all the same, regardless of year.

I just picked up a GS750 with spoke wheels. The vin plate is really worn, I can't read what year it was manufactured, just the month - 10. The frame serial number is GS750-194@@. Would this be a 1977 for Canada? I looked on a few site showing frame numbers and that was all I could find...
