A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello,
I am trying to break down my bike and remove the carbs. I am having some difficulty getting the airbox out. It doesn't seem to want to clear the area where the box bolts up to the fram at the top. I can get pretty close but it seems like I might have to remove the rubber boots that connect the box to the carbs and I am not sure if I can do that without damaging them. Also I have noticed a couple of small cracks in the box. Particularly where it attaches to the air filter box, is this a major issue?

Any tips to get the airbox out would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a pic for reference:

The carbs have to come out before the box. Slide the box backwards in the frame as far as it will go & pull the carbs out.

Once the carbs are out box will come out easy.

Put it back the same way - it's a pig of a job!

Dan :)

It's not that hard:

1. Remove left and right body side covers
2. Remove bolt for master cylinder resevoir
3. Remove bolt at rear of air filter box and loosen clamp on tube to air box
4. Pull air filter box back, wiggle around and remove
5. Remove gas tank
6. Unscrew clamps on carb tubes, front and rear
7. Remove 2 bolts at top of air box
8. Wiggle air box straight back off carbs
9. Pull carbs back and then to the right
10. Remove throttle cables from carb rack and set carbs aside
11. Slide airbox down, so tabs for 2 bolts clears frame. Slide forward to remove. You need to take the tube off first.

Thanks!

Thanks!

I guess I was working it from the wrong end, thanks for the tips!

I read your blog on this bike. A couple of things:

1. It doesn't sound like you have much riding experience. Register for a Team Oregon course today.

2. Don't ride the bike farther than around the block with the tires on it. Get some fresh rubber.

I bought my GS 1000 new, so I know a bit about the machine. PM me any time. Also, send me your email address and I'll add you to the NWGS list.
