A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

79 850 g, no keys

I have a clymer manual. the functionality of this 79 is unknown. there re no keys. I wanted to put a key in, turn it on, see if the ignition circuit is complete, then the start circuit. I am going to do the usual plugs out, oil in the plug holes, turn the motor manually with a wrench. But in regard o the ignition switch before I spend $50 to have a key made I will see if it turns over, see what the oild looks like. So the ignition switch has multiple colored wires. My schematic is black and white. I figure there is a red, black, and a couple other colors. If I put a battery in which 2 could I touch together to see if certain things are intact such as neutral light, brake light, instrument panel etc.

There’s a really nice color wiring diagram and a whole lot of other stuff that’s going to be really valuable to you on BikeCliffs Website. In case you can’t see my signature. Here’s the link:

Sorry, I have do direct answer to your hot-wiring query.

Remove the headlight and follow the wiring from the ignition key switch back into the headlight shell. There will be a 4 wire connector. Disconnect the connector. It has four wires. Red, Orange, Grey, and Brown. Make two jumpers using short lengths of insulated auto wire with spade connector crimped at both ends. Use the jumpers to connect Red to Orange, and Grey to Brown in the connector that is part of the loom, not the bit connected to the ignition switch. In this configuration you have completed the circuit as if the ignition key has been turned on.

If anything starts smoking, disconnect the jumpers.

I see in the manual what colors, 4 in number, are the ignition switch wires colors. thank you. I looked in your cliffs link also. thank you.turning with a wrench establishes just one thing. The switch on shows many others. thank you for your input

thank you for the great information.

If you have a key code, I can cut you keys, $10.00 each with plastic head, includes shipping..

The key code is stamped on the body of the ignition switch and usually stamped on the seat lock.

Another way to jump the ignition lock is to remove the ignition lock from the bike, then remove the bottom cover and remove the wiring assembly, this gives you access to turn the ignition on with a flat blade screw driver.

Regards,

David
