Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If your going to have the local "machine shop" weld your crank you may want to rethink this. They will have no way to check the balance and I haven't seen one yet who is truely equiped to do it right.
Take what I'm telling you to heart. I run a metal fab/welding shop and I send my cranks to a pro to make sure it's done right. I can't tig the center pin and I doubt your local shop will be able to.
Ray would Know more about this.

A good point. When I talked to them, they said they could handle it, but they have not seen the crank just yet either, so... Do you have a recommendation for someone else to weld it? I'm hoping to not have to spend a fortune to just get it welded ;)

In regards to boring the cylinders, does anyone know if there would be any reason a normal automotive machine shop wouldn't be able to handle that, or should I find someone to ship them to for work?

I plan on getting the crank resolved within the next week, getting the small internal parts together, and a gasket set, so I will be ready to put the crankcase back together within the month. Pistons will have to wait a few paychecks, but with any luck, the engine will be whole again by the end of the year and ready to be broken in so I can get busy with the EFI conversion.

Thanks!

Dude.. I weight 295 lbs suited and we are racing at 4200 ft elevation with what has to be the worst prepped track in the US. 155 lb dude I race out there, also on a zx-14, only running in the 9.85. Drag racing motorcycles is hard and everyone's got a damn opinion, don't they? Tell ya what chef1366, bring your best game out to that track and let's see what you can do. :p

Worst track: (Yeah.. the first 100 ft or so is uphill!)
wendover%20_track.jpg

Not to take away from Steve or anything... he is doing a great job on that GS and he will be a force to recon with soon enough.

oh.. BTW chef1366, I know I suck. I run what I run. Bet I can still beat you tho. ;)
Was the GS at sea level going down hill and you at 4200 feet going uphill? :p

must be a turbo..
ET doesn't match MPH.
dude needs to raise his bars maybe 2 full turns...very low.
maybe 2-3 teeth smaller on the rear so engine isn't spinning as hard in 4th and 5th.

C'mon Terry, you don't even let me play. :p

I think a more relevant question is why does it take over 6 minutes of video to show us a 9 sec run?

Man that was boring!

It's for the excitement, man! The tension, oh my!

Hehe.

I'm taking the crank to the local machine shop tomorrow to see what they say. If they can pull it off for < $80, works for me. Otherwise, I'll be monitoring fleabay.

I think the piston kit will be a December purchase, hopefully.

pull what off...the alt. rotor?

Welding it, is what I meant. I talked to them a week or so ago and they say they have done it before, but asked me some strange questions that made me wonder (such as, 'who told you you needed to do this?').

make sure its straight/true and have a weld shop(real weld shop) do it.
FYI
there is no way to balance a press pin crank...match the 4 rods/yes...balance...no.
99% of the crank builders out there do not balance.
falicon in FLA. would be the exception.
im sure someone will want to bust my balls on the balance statement i just made.

they are assembled one cheek at a time and placed in V blocks and checked with a dial indicator and beat around till they run true/weld as you go.
there is no removing or adding of material.
im not sure how falicon does it or if they do.
a crank shop may say"true and balance" but i believe those terms are one in the same when talking about a press pin crankshaft.
insert bearing cranks are a different story(one piece crank/rods are removable).
Big Jay may chime in and shed some more light on the balancing or lack there of that i am talking about.

Crank is at the machine shop, the guy is going to make sure it is true, make sure he can get in to weld it, and call me with a quote.

Dropped off the cases too, $40 sounded pretty reasonable for a jet wash.

woot, progress! I guess I should get the small parts and gaskets ordered.

Gunk and hot water works good for cases.
I've learned the hard way to use motorcycle specialists for such things as cranks and heads.

I was planning on cleaning it myself, but for $40, I'll let someone else deal with the nasty.

I figure if the guy can pull it off for sub $80, then I've saved a few bucks, otherwise I'll just dig up a used, good, already welded crank elsewhere.
