81 11e timing with a Dyna S

CincinnatiKid

Forum Mentor
Hi
im installing the Dyna S onto my engine. It’s going the same as it did last time, a year or two ago. As I’m finding the timing for cylinders 1&4, I need to rotate the whole plate all the way clockwise. Even then, I’m still a tiny bit off when timing for the full advance marks with the rotor held open. So I can adjust the individual pickup for 1&4 to get it right on. Then when I spin the motor to the 2&3 cylinder pickups, the 2&3 pickup can’t adjust to get the test light to turn on at the right moment.

Last time I came across this issue, I got the dremmel out and carved out more slot out in the 3 plate adjustments, and was able to get it timed well enough. But that doesn’t seem correct that this $180 product, spec’d for this bike, need to be dremmeled to work properly. Anybody else have the issue?

also, the last time I installed it, because of forum research, I thought I needed to get an earlier gs1000 mechanical advance for the Dyna to work. So I got one from a 78 gs1000, and it worked fine. This time I am using my stock 11E advancer unit. I noticed that the advance marks are different from each other on the two advancers. The 11e full advance mark is about 6.5mm from TDC mark, and the 1000 is almost 5mm. Could be the same degree, but different advanced diameter.

i only ask this because the gs1000 has factory advance mark on the advanced to use, while my 11e advanced only has factory marks for the 1&4 side, and I had to measure and translate the mark spacing to the 2&3 side. Not the most precise way of working.

any thoughts appreciated.

thanks

photo below shows 1&4 times correctly and 2&3 as close as I’m able to get it, but needs more advance.

Carved up the Dyna S aluminum plate, added a few more mm of clockwise adjustment, and was able to get the light to go on at the right times.

posting for those who come here with similar struggles.

will report back again when the motor is running.

Motor runs, runs pretty strong in neutral.
no leaks
haven’t done a test ride yet, still have some aesthetic work to do

but as a fun feature, the bike isn’t charging the battery @ this time. Connections all seem solid. Oh well. Another thing to troubleshoot before Monday’s track day and imminent redemption in front of the guys and gals on modern sport bikes!!

A couple of degrees off won't matter. I'd work on finding the best static setting, so 1-4 and 2-3 are close (split any error between the two). The F advance timing will be where it will be. You can't change that anyway.

The Dyna instructions indicated to hold the rotor to full advance and time based on that mark, which only existed from the factory on the 1-4 side.

either way, it runs decent in the driveway so far.

bringing it to a friend tonight to weld some new aluminum on the inside of the timing cover area of the engine to drill and tap for new threads that gave up during the last crash.

aesthetic mods look great, anyone familiar with Hudephol brewing? Out of, you guessed it, Cincinnati Ohio?? Their flagship beer was Hudy 14-K. Not made anymore
