I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

'82 650GL project bike, crankcase, and GL to G conversion

Hi ever'body,
I'm new to this forum and this model of bike. I've just been given an '82 GS650GL\\:D/. Downside, it doesn't run! The last owner put in the oil filter backwards:shock: and, well the engine fried. Which leads me to a couple of questions:

1) I'd like to keep the VIN # of the original engine. When I purchase the other engine, could I mate the top half of the original crankcase with the rest of the "new" engine without creating a new slough of problems?

2) Anyone know where to obtain a good functioning, reasonably priced engine?

3) While the GL version is classic, I particularly like the GS650G version (e.g., see: http://www.hoohoohoblin.com/SuzukiGS650G.html ). Is replacing the bodywork of the GL w/the G feasable? I suppose if the frames are the same, it would be. If this is feasable, pls disregard #1 above.

4) The mags are really nice. I'd like to put some tubeless tires on these rims. Anyone know if that conversion is possible?

I look forward to riding the GS in whatever form it turns out, and thanks for the help!

You shouldn't mix and match split crank cases. They are made to match. Is the old engine froze?

Cutting off the numbers from one engine and grafting it onto another would be not only highly difficult, but completely illegal.

Yes, the crank is frozen. The match issue is the one I was concerned about.
I haven't split the cases yet, but sans the heads/sleeves looking down into the case, the crank is completely immobile.
Looks like I need a new engine?

Do you have a roller bearing crank?

If you seized a rod and did not gouge the cylinders I'd say you can reuse it. If you burned the crank bearing journals I'd say junk it while possibly using the top end.

"Shaft drive 650's are plain bearing.

Engine might be salvageable. Only way to know is to take it apart."

I'll open the case and take a look. Thanks for the input!
