'82 850 Air Filter Fitment

How is the air filter supposed to fit into the airbox on a '82 GS850G? Didn't have a filter when purchasing the bike so a fellow GSR member here sent me the airfilter frame - which I promptly stuffed with the K & N. At any rate, the airbox has a tab of some sort but the filter looks like it takes a screw. Do I need a different filter frame or is there an extra bracket of some sort needed?

Thanks in advance.

Good morning Ed,
I'm not sure but I think your air box is very similar (if not the same) to my '81 GS850G. If it is the same, mine has a track at the top that my filter frame slides into, then it is screwed in (only on the one side) to secure it. Hope that helps.

Think I just aswered my own question, the parts fishe shows a different filter assembly for the '82 compared to the earlier 850's. The frame I have must be for the earlier bikes. Might have to rig up some sort of clamp adaptor.

Or Not. I just checked out a parts finder on a site and from the outside, your airbox is different than mine so I guess I don't know what the inside looks like. Sorry if I gave you false information.

Should I stand on my head?

Mr. Nessism,

Hmmm. My bike is a couple of years older than yours. For my airbox, I slide the filter assembly in from the left side and the tab gets screwed to the roof of the airbox. I don't have the clip on the floor of my airbox as shown in your picture. Instead, the right side of my airbox has a couple of channels into which that side of the air filter assembly slides and is held in place against the roof of the airbox. Your picture is not upside down, is it? Just wondering.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Yep. I'm sure you're correct. That airbox probably takes a different air filter frame assembly. In other words, I concur. 8-[

I'll shut up now.

Airbox is off the bike right now. Just got done cleaning it up and installing new foam in the end caps.

The filter is in the proper installed position - problem is, there is no way to secure it to the airbox itself. I think Suzuki must have changed the airbox and filter at some point - part numbers changed in 1982. I either need to come up with some way of anchoring the filter inside the airbox or find a later filter frame assembly.

Why don't you ask Dan the man if he still has the complete assembly I sold him? Maybe you can use the complete earlier box??

Dan :)

The filter cage you have is not the correct one for the 82. On mine the filter cage has a square cutout on top of the cage that locks into the tab on the top of the box housing shown in your picture. This is not a very clear look at it but you can see how the tab has a slight radius to it and the square cut out on top to lock into the box with. If you cannot find one I have an extra.

Sent a Private Message inquiring about the filter frame.

Thanks in advance.

don't you love these little "improvements" that would happen on bikes from year to year!
as, in terms of ease of maintenance, i guess the newer filter frame clip-on/off system is that little bit more "advanced" then the older screw-on/off type...
