    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82' 850G shaft drive question

I bought and 82 850g in December and have been putting back together as the po had it ripped apart to make a cafe out of it. I've got it all together with a few exceptions and after reading the post I decided to take a look at the rear spines to make sure they are not going to fail the first time I ride it and of course to lube it.
The question I have is this bike only has about 7000 miles on it I understand the 82 came with the gold splines and they are the weaker ones but with this few miles am I good for a while? How soon do these fail? Is it just higher mileage bikes or should I be looking for a new spline set now so I have it when it fails?
Lastly I found a new one for $150 good price?

Me, I'd wait before dropping $150 bucks. You are aware of spline issue, so stay vigilant- but at 7k, this shouldn't be a problem.
 
I changed out a spline on an '82 at around 50,000 miles. I'm not certain it was original though. I was not the original owner.

It cost round one hundred bucks in '09. Its $128.54 at Partshark today.

Splines anyone

I replaced mine around 4k ago and it was worn about a third of the width of the splines, it was original and was one of the gold ones. Once they start to show wear they will go in a hurry. That connection is not designed to move back and forth. It isn't a difficult job just to take a look, clean it up and re-lube if that's all she needs. Then you will now for sure and won't need to think about it until you pull the wheel to change the tire.

They usually go somewhere between 25,000 - 40,000 miles. Sometimes more, if the bike is only ridden by a little old lady on sunny Sundays.

How's that for vague? :D

Anyway, you've got a while to save up a few more rubles.
