This morning my 82 GS850GL was vandalized by someone. The ripped the wires out of my turn signals and tried to removed the fixtures. They are done for, I either have to buy some used ones to replace or go ahead and swap all the lights out for LED fixtures. What say you? Any suggestions?

Well id go with K&L oem look alikes but not until I hunted down the ^%#&^%#& and killed him with kindness.

Was in a mall parking lot, mall security said no cameras there, filed report anyway. How is there no cameras 30 feet from the entrance?

I bought dual filament lights, I was planning on doing running lights anyway when I redid the fuse box. Gonna put a relay on the top 3 runs and just have the ignition switch control the relay so the power is not runnjng in a 35yo wire run

I have never known there ever to be cameras when folks ask about them.

when I retired from the Navy, I took a job with a security company doing camera system installs. EVERY business we did had about 270 cameras on the employees and about 30 (general numbers for ratio purposes 10:1) between the parking lot and the store. The loss prevention was more concerned about employee theft, they were also ordered not to stop shoplifters, just get them on camera. Sad really, our high prices are due to the employees and not the patrons.

OK, so I have forced myself now to buy everything to do this modification.

4 dual filament fixtures - running lights
2 Horn relays - not for the coils- I already have that done
1 6 way fuse box

Basically any actual power that goes thru the ignition switch will be eliminated. The ignition switch will only be used to actuate the relays and eliminate the drops in the 35 year old wiring on the key and on/off loop from the battery to the fuse box. power will now go from battery to relay to new fuse box. 1 relay for running lights 1 relay for the other left over. Will have to run a new wire from mid to front and mid to back for the rear and front running lights. No biggie there. In the process I also have an LED Daymaker light off of a wrecked Harley I am putting on for the headlight, if it doesn't work, it was free, I am not overly concerned. So ya, this incident forced my hand for what I was holding off to do until the end of summer. I am pretty sure my charging system will thank me in the end lol.

Have you actually checked to see if there are voltage drops across your wiring or are you adding relays on a suspicion? With all the work you will be doing, it would probably be just as easy to re-wire another harness.

Ill just be running 1 wire to the headlight and 1 wire to the tail cluster area. Nothing significant, everything else is right there in the fuse box area. I am really just eliminating the loop from battery to fuse box to ignition switch back to fuse box then out to accessories. New set up the wire to the ignition will only need to carry the power to actuate the main relay. So the power will go from battery to relay to fuse box. a 1 foot journey as opposed to an 8 foot loop of undersized wire with connectors journey. I am maintaining the wire to the lights etc, just getting rid of the loop so to speak. but yes, I have a voltage drop on the ignition loop that doesn't please me. Can be remedied by eliminating some of the juice that flows through it.

All sounds like a good plan to me. Probably because that's what I did, too. :encouragement:

Good call on the incandescent bulbs for signals. If you go with LEDs, you will need to add load resistors (which negate the load saving of the LEDs) or change your flasher, which presents other opportunities for creativity. The stock flasher is not only a thermal-based flasher, it also contains circuitry that is part of the auto-cancel system. You will not find another flasher ANYWHERE that has that, so you will need to get creative if you wish to keep your auto-cancel. If you are not worried about auto-cancel, it's a simple process to cut one wire and re-route it.

the day maker led headlight has a built in driver assembly. By all reason and install instructions I shouldn't need a load resistor for the headlight. Also, there is an LED turn signal/running light module for $40 on eBay that elminates the need for load resistors, it also has the auto off timer (has 4 settings) for the signals. Took me a bit to find it.

Yeah, the headlight is not a problem. Good thing you already have the DayMaker light. The ones I have seen were CONSIDERABLY more expensive than the TruckLites that I have gotten.

You have a link to that flasher? I would be interested in seeing that. Would like to see if that might be easier than modifying the harness for an aftermarket flasher so it can use the stock auto-cancel control unit.

Ebay search "motorcycle running light module". "Turn signal module". "LED turn signal module" "led running light module". Add motorcycle and or driver in to them as well. Kurakyn makes a solid one. They don't just jump out and bite ya, you have to scroll thru.

I can't get the daymaker to fit in the bucket... too much wiring packed in there. Suggestions on a larger bucket? Meanwhile...at the Legion of Doom.... I put the daytime running lights on, just have to run the wire.

Where is that guy with the 850 that put a daymaker on his .... would like to know what bucket he used.
