A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Went for a ride the other day, was about 60 miles in when I stopped to strech a bit. I went back to my bike after about 15 minutes, and it wouldn't turn over at all. All of the electronics were working, but it wouldn't turn over. I got it home thanks to my buddy with a truck, and I gave it another go at starting it. It started up, but promptly begin to billow smoke. I tracked it down to find the CDI was the culprit. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue, I want to make sure that something else didn't cause this before I get a new one. Also, is there any aftermarket options for a replacement CDI? OEM ones seem to be extremely expensive.

The bike has 15,000 miles if that means anything.

it's an ignitor not CDI.
i have a couple for your 83 750E/ES if your interested.
your problem is not a common problem.
others will be along soon to offer advice.

Welcome to the GSR and sorry to learn you are having problems with your bike.

For one thing, you need to get a service manual for your bike so you can properly troubleshoot. I assume you don't have one because if you had you would know that your bike doesn't have a CDI (it's an ignitor).

I'd start by inspecting all the wiring and looking for shorts. If the ignitor is gone, finding an OEM replacement is your best bet. The Dyna 2000 would work, but it's quite expensive.

Yeah I don't have a service manual so I just googled the part number and it came up as a CDI, guess that is wrong. Where would I be able to track down a 30 year old service manual? This is my first bike so I'm pretty new to most this.
