A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I know there isn't an "OFF" position on these cocks, but I don't know which position is which on my bike..........

for all of you jerks that want to say " do a search" I did and found only 1 thread that is remotely close and the guy says he has a 3 O'clock position, 6 O'clock position, and a 9 O'clock position.......WTF!!!

I have a 12 O'clock, 3 O'clock, and 6 O'clock position...........I am assuming the 12 is prime, 3 is on, and 6 is res

is this correct?

When I have the cock in the 12 O'clock position it overflows my carbs when its hot on sidestand.....I have to leave it in the 3 O'clock position to keep it from doing this.

can someone please varify this for me.........

upon returning from my morning ride this morning, my bike just dumped about 2 cups of fuel through the PODS while on sidestand......it soaked the starter motor and it wouldn't start when I noticed it..........I push started it to get it to run and now its fine.......I'm leaving the cock in the 3 O'clock position.........

On my '83 550L, 12 o'clock is ON, 9 o'clock is PRIME and 3 o'clock is RES. Don't know if it's the same as yours or not, though...

Based on mine that sounds about right although I don't have a 12 and 6 o'clock nor do I think of it like that. Full counter-clockwise is prime, Full clockwise is reserve, and half way between those is on.

I'm telling you that my petcock is NOTHING like the one shown in the 83 550E-ES-L Service Manual.......

The Service Manual shows what you're explaining.......full CW is Res, FULL CCW is Pri, and straight down(6 O'clock) is ON

Mine has the arrow and I can go from pointing straight up (12 O'clock) and go ClockWise to straight down (6 O'clock) and I assume there is another position at straight to the right (3 O'clock).......that's IT. NOTHING more!!

I just tried to go past the straight down (6 O'clock) position ClockWise and it won't go........

My wife's "85" GS550 ES 6 o'clock is on, 3 o'clock is res, 12 o'clock is pir. Not just my opinion, I just looked at it

If you have access to a sidecover, on, res, & pir is molded into the plastic, around the knob (lever). Like said, arrow down is on, up is pri, & to right (3 o'clock) is res

my sidecovers don't have anything molded into them......nor do they have a decal or anything.

You should probably re-clean your float needle valve assemblies if they overflow that easily - petcock question aside.

I've since replaced the float needles as they were slightly grooved.......but the problem was that it was being left in the prime position all the time and since the prime system goes to that right side carb I think that was our problem!!!!

Problem is corrected now that the petcock is in the right postion!:D

might want to wash those pods after that too...can see in the pics the oil is just about washed off of em.

Do a better search.

I found this thread in five seconds. It answers your question.

I typed "1985 GS550ES petcock" in the search feature, and, sure enough, up it popped.

Jerk.

I'm getting tired of *******S like you!! This forum is quick to either help or just go around being jerks.........

I'm not going to participate in these forums anymore........too many "jerks" lurking around to jump your crap to make themselves look better!

You're the one who called people jerks to begin with. And it isn't the first time you've gotten crappy for no reason because you're frustrated with something and you take it out on people here.

It's guys like you who have made the technical forum almost as cantankerous as the off topic forum here, because you demand answers and get angry when you either don't get instant solutions to your questions, or don't like the answers you get when people try to help you.

Take a Xanax or something. Geez.
