    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello ladies and gents,

just received the refurb kits for my 79 GS750E,

before I start replacing everything, I am hoping someone would know some of the settings for the main needle height etc.. for a stock airfilter and exhausts?
At the moment the bike starts and runs well but unless I screw the pilot screws almost all the way in,when I rev it it takes quite a while for the revs to come back down.
For the price I thought I may as well refurb the carbs and set them up as close to factory as possible.
Any advice before I start would be greatly appreciated.

Send the carb kits back to wherever you bought them from
Then read the VM carb cleaning tutorial
 
"Slow return to idle" is a sign of an air leak, probably either the intake tube [the black connectors between the carbs and the cylinder heads] o-rings (cheap) or the intake tubes themselves (about $120 for all 4.). I was reluctant to replace them because of the cost, but it was a major improvement.

There's a chart of carb specs on BassCliff's site too. I also found and reposted a chart with more detailed specs by engine #.

I have a 1985 GS450L model that I removed the 2 carbs so far but yet to start cleaning and adjusting. I read about replacing O-rings to prevent the possibility of air leaks. Cycleorings seems to only have o-rings for the 80 to 83 model years? How do I order the correct kit for my 1985 carbs?

Should be the same, or close enough to be worth the money for the kit. Be sure to get new O-rings for the carb boots that attach to the head.

So I get confused quite easily .... does the Combo kit include all the needed O-rings and other replacement parts? OR, do I have to order both option 1 and 2 ...... to get what I want/need? I'm ready to order from cycleorings when I get that info. Sure wish they had a picture or 2 of "kit".
 
Order the kit which will give you all of the O-rings for the carbs themselves and a set of O-rings for the intake boots from Cycleorings. You don't need to replace any parts since all of your jets are good just need cleaning.

You will need to go to Z1 Enterprises (www.z1enterprises.com) or your favorite dealer parts store (some of us use partsoutlaw.com) to get the bowl gaskets if yours tear or are in bad shape anyway. DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU TO BUY A CARB KIT for $25 - it is a waste of money

Yes, I want to send a brief message to Robert Barr .... but a search for him turned up empty. For the GS450 twin carbs he has two ordering options. Basically I just need to know what is in both ordering kits? Does ordering the COMBO kit ..... include the 0-rings in option 1?

Did you see this information on his site:
This kit includes 24 O-rings in four sizes: 4 for the fuel intake needle valve seats;
4 for the air bleed needle valves (the little 'idle mix' adjustment screw);
8 (4 each) for the two fuel tubes;
4 for the carb bowl vent 'T's;
4 for the starter (choke) plunger retaining fittings.
(Usually the choke O-ring is OK; I include it to be thorough).
Material = Nitrile (Buna-N), 70 Durometer. This is the ideal material for this application.


An important aspect of these O-rings is that they are of recent manufacture (cure), so they're new and supple; they haven't been sitting for twelve years getting hard and brittle. This exact kit has been installed on about a zillion bikes by now. The rebuild procedure is really pretty simple, and is superbly detailed by John Bloemer on the GS Resources web site. The first 'guinea pig' for these O-rings was my own GS850, which now runs beautifully & idles like a watch. The chore is finding the damned O-rings.

These fit the CV-style carbs only -- 1980 and later. If you have the older slide-type (VM) carbs, see the VM page. Also note that the kit doesn't include gaskets or anything else -- just the O-rings. Lots of 'em.

My goodness, how could you NOT find him?

In the upper-right corner of virtually every page is a search window. Directly under that window is the option for "Advanced Search". Click on that. Look down the fields, find "User Name". Start typing in that field. When you have entered three letters, you will see all the user names that start with those letters. By the time you get "robert" typed in, you will see his name there, "robertbarr".

Or you can bypass all that and just click on the word "Forum" in the upper left, then look directly below that for "Private Messages" and click on that. When the new window comes up, look down the left side for "Send New Message and click on it. Put your cursor in the "Recipient Users" field, just start typing r o b e r t ... (without the spaces), you will soon see his name. Select it, continue with his message.

Okay, I ordered a carb Oring set for the twin GS450 and also intake boot orings. I also sent Robert Barr a PM but didn't choose the option to save a sent copy .... so it doesn't show up on my Sent file .... causing me to suspect somehow it did NOT get sent. I'm sure it did, tho .... after sending 3 copies.

I am a little slow to figure out how to navigate on this forum ..... but a real thanks for the good advice and getting me going in the right direction!
