A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Aftermarket Rplacement Air Filters

850 Combat

After cleaning out the carbs and getting it going last month, I just determined that my GS1000G in Oregon has no filter in the box. I intend to install one. I am leaning toward a Uni, because I have had good service with Uni pod type filters in the past, and I have found one at a reasonable price. It looks like OEM, K&N, Uni, Emgo, and at least one other sell (hopefully) direct replacement filters for this bike. The bike has new carb boots and O rings, the air box boots are still very pliable. It runs pretty darned well for not having a filter. Only very slighty lean off idle and at light throttle. K&N is close to 50 bucks, OEM around 60 bucks.

I'm happy with a decent running stock set up. I'm not looking for more power or a reason to rejet.

Any recommendations?

The Uni and K&N in-airbox type filters require an OE filter cage so keep this in mind if you go that route. The Uni is very similar to the OE filter so I'd go that route, assuming you already have the cage.

I went the route of buying uni foam sheets and cutting myself the right size. It was under 10 bucks but again... You need the cage.

I don't know if your 1000G wears the same filter cage as an 850, but if it does, I have a spare, along with the UNI filter foam. Look it up on the parts fiche and pm me if you're interested. Oh, the filter cages I have are one for an '81 850G and one for an '82 850. The boxes for the filters are similar but not quite identical.

OEM cage and foam are still on offer at PartShark:

FILTER
13780-45010 $46.64

ELEMENT
13781-45010 $24.58

The filter element comes pre-oiled.

I believe that if you buy the first part (cage), it includes the foam filter element as well.

The Uni filter element works fine. I have two that I rotate, since they seem to take forever to dry after being washed.
