Alternative oil for K & N air filters... ?

I have recently bought a drop in K&N air filter I (my first K&N).

The directions call for using ONLY K&N oil (of course). It warns NOT to use motor oil, WD40, etc..., only the K&N stuff.

Now..., me, being "value oriented, didn't buy the K&N stuff - what can I use that will work equally as well?

I thought I've read that others here are using motor oil with good results?

Please, make me smarter.

Mike

I'm trying to remember, but I think I got a pack with K & N cleaner AND oil for less than 20 bucks... I mean really.... c'mon... If it was my bike, I'd cough up the money for their oil. It's not THAT expensive.

The best part is that their oil is aerosol, so you just spray it and walk away. The cleaner also works well, but Varsol works no problem, too.

If you are determined to avoid K&N oil, check with a local shop that handles off road and MX bikes, they should have alternate brands of aerosol filter oil on the shelf. Whatever you get, it will last for years. I still have the can I bought 20 years ago for my 86 GSXR750, so you can spread the cost over a lot of riding seasons...

The K&N brand oil is quite a bit thinner than common 10W-40 motor oil - more like straight 10 weight. I agree with the others to just buy the kit.

FYI - K&N's flow great because they don't filter the best. For that reason I recommend a healthy coat of K&N oil (just don't go overboard).

OK, OK.... I get the message.

BTW - if you want to see a pic of me, look up the term "cheap bastard" & there I'll be!

Thanks

In some ways I am too, but don't forget the old saying
"Penny wise and pound foolish"
If it runs like crap with another oil or eats the filter... what have you saved?

I got K&N oil it's pink like the original.... I think they now do a clear (not 100% sure) which would look better on the bike in my opinion.

I'm gonna rattle the cage. Just use motor oil.

I have never bought filter oil in the 25+ years I have been messing with motorbikes and never had a problem. I use the 'squeeze it through, squeeze it out' technique and then 'squash' it in an old towel to get rid of the excess. Works fine for me.

This technique is not appropriate for K&N filters since they can not be squeezed, works fine for foam filters though.

Never seen clear K&N oil, only red. The red oil helps you judge if you have complete coverage on the filter; the filter is white after washing and should be a uniform red after oiling.
