All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Another crazy cager

Holy S.......glad you pulled thru that.....
This brings to light one of motorcycling dilemmas- while some think limiting seat time may lessen the exposure to risk, it does NOTHING for honing ones skills. Seems that you were quick witted and chose to shoot the gap to safety. Sadly im not sure if I could have reacted as quickly.

Wow! I started this thread 8 years ago and now it pops up again. heh. I have to admit, it is burned in my memory though. As for "choosing" to shoot the gap, it was an easy choice because it was the only choice.

Lest the elements of luck or instinct be overstated in this amazing story, in fairness , you have been preparing for it by exploring the fine white line. In the time available the decision had to have been subconscious but rehearsed to the point that it appeared instinctive.
Another reason to develop skills. How often do we hear of undercornering and the marine rescue will tell you that in many cases the crew gives up before the boat.
How viral would that footage have been ? ... and can I give the police your number next time they catch me snaking down the road?

I think a vid would have done well on youtube. LOL Probably cause some idiots to try and duplicate it though. heh

An ex-courier apeaks...
Always go for the gap - it's always bigger than you think.

I agree wholeheartedly with you. Maneuver first, add throttle if you need it, use brakes only as a last resort if nothing else is working.

Wow is this Wayback Wednesday?? If you haven't cleaned the scat out of those shorts by now Earl then it's fossilized.

Heh heh eh. Perhaps oddly, it didn't scare me at all. I was too focused on threading a 36" wide bike through a 37" hole at 100+ mph to have any kind of emotion. I knew going in that it was an all or nothing shot. If I had missed and splattered or gone down, the third car following would have run over anything that was left.

almost sounds like like some kinda dare devil coordinated riding/driving. I don't even like to imagine it happening to me.

I certainly don't want to do it again. LOL It was probably the most intensely focused I have even been. I think if I had opened either hand on the grips, my fingernails would have scratched paint on the cars as I passed between. heh I do remember ducking at the last moment because of a big side mirror on the right side of the truck that went past where my head would have been. Trust me on this one, you would not have liked it. LMAO

Focus is everything in such situations. Excellent response on your part!

And,....thanks for the memories, as I read through the posts I noticed pharkmeh in there, and he has been gone for a long time.

Yeah, I miss a lot of the old timers that aren't here anymore. I'd like to see Pharkmeh return.

It was part skill and practice, part awareness and experience and part luck to escape that one. It was luck that in a split second, I made a half dozen assessments and choices and all were correct. Through the years, I have a set rule of response for any situation. A motorcycle's strong points are the ability to filter through small openings, maneuverability, and acceleration. Their weakness is they can't take a hit. My rule, instinct, is always maneuver to avoid and accelerate if needed.
Never go for brakes unless all is already lost. (normal stop and go is a different matter) Never bother with the horn, it assumes someone will hear it, figure out that it is them you're blowing it at, then figure out why, then do the right thing, and even if they get everything right, they're going to burn up time I don't have.

The only use for a horn on a motorcycle is honking at girls. LOL
