Bandit foolishness

About to go into my motor on the Bandit 1200. I have acquired a Katana 750 high comp head, GSXR 750 slingshot intake cam, and what I mike out to be a Katana 1100 exhaust cam. I have a Yosh RS-3 slip on and seals and gaskets are on the way. I am assuming I will need a Stage 3 jet kit considering I will have to go with a pair of siamesed K&N or BMC filter s since the 750 head raises the carbs a fair bit. Unfortunately, I don't know if the high comp head alters the necessary jetting beyond what I would get with an off the shelf Stage 3 kit from the usual sources. I was musing about going whole hog on a set of RS36 Mikunis, but I can't really justify the cost. Anyone have any tips?

By the way, has anyone ever heard of 6Sigma jet kits? They seem to offer some extra fine tuning of your kit based on the list of mods you supply them, but I have heard next to nothing about the company, or the success rate of the kits. They do offer a money back guarantee if you aren't satisfied, so they seem pretty confident in their stuff. Thanks for any help.

Holeshot Preformance is the place for a jet kit no one has done more testing than Dale has. What did you do to the dot head that's a lot of work for not much of a gain you should have the head ported before you install it. Are you sure it is a dot head. Not all Katana heads were the dot heads. If you need any help or parts I have gobs of Bandit and dot head parts.

It is a dot head, as is has the requisite casting dot on the lower front of the side fins (96 Katana 750) and was built in the era when dot heads were standard equipment on the 750 Kats (89-97). I'm not doing much to the head, maybe a port match for the carb boots as there is usually a fair sized lip around the inlet that protrudes into the air stream. The head itself supposedly already breathes a bit better than a standard oil boiler head due to the semi-downdraft inlet tracts. I think I would do more harm than good trying to improve on it. I was more after the compression bump than anything else, as I had a hard time justifying a $700 set of pistons from Holeshot when a $50 head does the same thing. An extra 8 to 15hp jump for $50 seems to be a no brainer. It's an 8000mi head and it is spotless. If I went the high-comp piston route, I would have a set of useless pistons if I decide I want a 1216 in the future. As it stands, a stage 1 is supposedly good for almost 120hp, so I thought the head and high lift cams would get me closer to 130hp. Scuttlebutt is the hot cams are wasted with the standard compression ratio.

I am just wondering if this compression hike and better breathing affects jetting requirements, as most if not all Stage 3 kits are built with the standard head in mind.

i'll add this because i had good results without removing the head on my 1997...
the factory head pipe is heavy and very restrictive.
i used a two brothers complete system.
i added 86/87 GSXR1100 cams and ended up at 100/101 on the lobe centers.
i installed a 89-92 GSXR1100 dynajet st.3 jet kit in my carbs.
i added a +5 degree advancer.
at the time i was 235-240lbs in street cloths and not a great rider/racer.
the above mods let me run low 10.70's@130
my point is the cams and correct lobe centers added over 2 tenths right off the bat.
when i sold the bike i had over 500 strip runs on it and it was still like new with zero issues and is still on the road today.

You should never try to port your own head if you don't have experience in that area. The Dot head is a great way to get extra power and will flow better than the bandit head
130hp is very doable on a stock Bandit motor with full pipe, jet kit and GSXR cams degreed in. I like them at 104/106 Dales stage 3 jet kit and his full exhaust system. He even sells the GSXR cams new also.

I do a Nicley ported street port work on a stock valve, APE tit retainers and springs, GSXR1100 cams, stock motor, stock carbs with a jet kit and full V/H completion exhaust, with 62'' wheel base run mid 9.90 @ almost 139mph. I did that head for a guy in Canada named Marc it was a Black Bandit. I found his sig. on his bike from another site.

Not too encouraging...

I guess there's a reason Holeshot is the go-to source. This will be my first time futzing with carbs, so I need as little drama as possible, which is why the RS36's were a consideration.

Yep, consider me Captain Bolt On. I don't have any facilities for any custom work, which is why the Bandit/GSXR mix and matching is so appealing.

I was targeting 130hp, since most 1166cc kitted GS1100s seem to be at or very near there. I figured with nearly the same displacement and a better flowing head, it shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

One thing you need to check is where your petcock will land in relation to the carbs with the DOT head. On an 82/83 GS1100E, it puts the carbs into the petcock & you have to get creative. I don't know where it lands on a Bandit but wanted to give you a heads up.

Thanks Ray. Yes, that was mentioned in a post by someone who has already done it. He used a Pingle tap, and i think he jacked the rear of the tank a bit. That was on a first gen Bandit 1200, so we'll see if a Pingle does the job on its own. Someone else modified an FZ6 tap for the same effect for a lot less $$$. Another reason for RS36's; I think they are a shorter carb without the vacuum top hat.

If you use the 36RS carbs you will hit your hp goal no problem
