A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have kinda gathered that and that's why I didn't tell any about the leaking valve stem. I just hope that after I rebuild the carbs that I don't find that what is going on is some sort of electrical weakness, causing the plugs not to fire full spark? Thanks for the input.

This is a bubble(?) on the side of #2 carb float. Dosen't seem to be a hole, what do you carb experts think?

If it's not a hole, maybe a dab of epoxy on it? Just enough to keep it from getting worse. Iv'e never seen that happen before.

I use super glue to fill small cracks in wood I turn on a lathe. Controlled, multipul coats, built up, over loose material, to fill gaps. I don't see a hole, looks more like a poped blister.
Bruce,
Forget the message on your cell from yesterday. Newbee carb-rebuilder panic  . I worked out a plan.

"Do you get your filters local or mail order? "

NAPA # is 1220. I buy them by the case to save a few bucks. (no O-ring)
Hastings # is LF570, comes with O-ring. Also buy them by the case.

I can usually re-use the O-rings several times. ;)

Is super glue impervious to gas? I don't know. I've used JB weld on broken float posts and it holds up.

Rootbeer please

Rootbeer please

Rootbeer or what....? I have someone local who will give me a set of 550 carbs. Don't know year. All I know is bike has mag wheels and a kickstart and is an E. I'll PM soon if I get in a bind. Very nice of you to offer.

Charlie,
I don't think those carbs will be any use to you. They sound like they will be 22mm VM carbs, not the CV type that are on your bike.

All kickstart models had the VM carbs.

Thanks Don. I haven't seen these carbs or the bike they came off of yet. He offered they to me in idle conversation.

I've got the carbs done. See if i can get them back on the bike with air box and cables in the right order. Plan to bench sink. Got my Morgan Carbtune this week. New float via Chef. I hope this goes as easy as the carb rebuild went.

Don:
The 550 carbs were VM's. Looks like I found a 78-9 550 parts bike, less the motor. This fellow with the 550, bought this bike for the engine. He is mounting it in a riding lawnmower, no blade mind you. Will post pictures some day.

Thanks all.

Just got the carbs back on the bike. Once I got the float bowls filled with gas it started up fine.

I'm sure there is some little old retired Japanese motorcycle design engineer who is still laughing his arse off about how hard he made it to install the carbs and air box. Tight fit, requiring all my patience. Talk about 10 pounds in a 5 lb. bag.

I bench synched the carbs, and set the one pilot(?) adlustment screw at 2 turns. Set float height to spec. Idels at around 1100 rpms. Took it for a ten mile ride and it  scoots now. No bogging down a 5000 rpm. 70mph now, or at least compared to my 450. It runs so good I'm afraid to touch a thing. I don't have anything to compare it to.

I got a Morgan Carbtune to sync carbs and I remember reading the proceedure to to adjust pilot screw. Which do I do first?

Thanks to all. GSResources alone is a good reason to own a GS. Looks like I'll be riding the 650 at the Mt. Shasta Rally. I'm sure my south end will be happier.
