As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Basket Springs

Search feature hasn't shown any results for clutch basket spring part numbers. If anyone has this info or has bought springs elsewhere to rebuild clutch baskets could you please share the information. Thanks.

Shimming the springs with washers is the standard fix. For some model bikes, the 1100E for example, there are aftermarket backplate/spring/rivet kits. There used to be kits for the chain drive 1000 as well but they are getting rare at this point.

The chain drive 1000 basket is larger in diameter and holds less plates.

OK. So im trying to understand why that makes the dampner springs any different... im not talking about pressure plates springs here.

Ed knows what you're talking about... both he & I have broken apart GS1000 baskets & shimmed them in the past. The springs have never been available. :)

At a wild guess they are trying to shift the buzzy driveline harmonics away from places the bike would operate in ?

For what it's worth...

Like Dan mentioned, both he and I rebuilt a chain drive 1000 clutch hub by shimming the springs with washers. It helped reduce the rattling effect greatly. On another GS1000 bike I wound up with the clutch hub was rebuilt with a HD backplate and springs, and that clutch had even better performance; it didn't rattle at all and had a smoother engagement response.

The above kit offers springs and rivets. No back plate though. It wouldn't be overly difficult to fabricate one yourself though.

Thats the kind of experienced response i was looking for Dan and Eds. I have a MIG welder and many decades of welding experiences so reworking the zookie back plate should be nothing hard. APE wanted around 185 bucks so thats why i asked of i could just get springs. My mad plan was to grind the rivets flush, pop off the plate, and weld it back on. I THINK the springs in the burgundy and orange 78 1000C are going south.

I shimed the basket springs on my '79gs1K and stopped the clutch rattle. after that tho and with a new clutch it seems a bit grabby and launches. fun to ride.

So you can use a mig welder right? You don't have to tig the rivets back on? I just got new hd springs and rivets from suzukiperformanceparts.co.uk.
Was hoping i could complete the job without having to outsource to someone with a tig welder

This is all I did except I paid a guy to tig weld it shut after clamping. Cost $25. Remember it spins so you somewhat need it balanced. :)

I've seen a piece on a smaller bike in a british cycle mag where they drill & tap and bolt the thing back together. Lower powered bike though....

Mine has been in there for about 10,000 miles now. No rattle. Upgrade the nut too. Either Ape or the 1150 model one.
