All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Man, I've been waiting for you to finish this thread for me to give it a try. I'm sure it's been posted a million times over, but what brand gaskets do you prefer? Where do you get them from? I've heard that some people like certain brands over others.

It's been discussed around here quite a bit. OEM gaskets are the only safe bet, especially for the base gasket o-rings. Vesrah has been known to fail there by a few of us. Cometic and Athena head gaskets have also been questioned. Pretty much all the other seals in the engine have been relatively trouble free with non-OEM, though differences in quality have been noted. We're notoriously cheap around here, but we've learned the hard way to bend that rule on this issue.

Hey Cliff - I began a rebuild at about the same time you did and, like you, I'm not quite done either! My solution was to buy a Suzuki Bandit 1200s to ride until I get this project finished, hopefully in the next month or so.

I just couldn't go that long without a ride! I'm actually looking forward to having two bikes.

I just got the new rings installed last week.

Any progress? I don't see how you could go so long without a bike.;)

Thinking of redoing the top end of my GS1000G sometime in the near future. This project of yours has inspired me to do it. Just need to see that it hasn't killed you.

Sure would like to see this one complete. This is one of those more "intimidating" projects that many of us would like to do but are apprehensive about. Write-ups like this are sorely needed.

Damn, followed this thread as a guide to tear it all down....please finish the thread so I can put it back together! :concern::D

BC is apparently a little busy with Team Rodent these days. He drops in from time to time, but we don't know when he'll be resuming this mission.

Due to a broken valve guide I am planning to do the same thing. It is a brilliant guide until now, but this is a very looong cliffhanger, BassCliff ;)
