    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

First off hello to all. I just purchased a 1980 gs 850L a few weeks ago. I was having trouble last week starting it, so I replaced the battery. I rode maybe 30 miles that same day and it has sat until today. I rode another 80 miles today and it would not start again. We were able to push start it and drove to orielys, they tested battery said one battery cell bad and it was completly dead. So they charged it we rode home, 80 miles and it still won't start, battery dead. Some how my battery keeps going dead and I have no clue as to why. It seems like I can charge the battery and get about 2hrs of riding in before the battery is completey dead. WHY!

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. rushmtrsports,

Welcome to the forum. You have some work to do on your charging system. In your "mega-welcome" you will find a link to The Stator Papers. After reading the theory pay particular attention to the troubleshooting flowchart. Clean ALL of the electrical connections and grounds on the entire wiring harness. A lot of corrosion has built up in 30 years. Check and clean all of the bullet connectors, molex connectors, the big ground strap from the negative battery terminal to the bottom of the engine, the fusebox, the ignition switch, the solenoid connections, everything from the headlight bucket to the tail light. You will want to run the ground connection from the regulator/rectifier directly to the negative terminal of the battery. Worst case scenario, you'll need a new battery, new regulator/rectifier unit, and a new stator. Start with a known good battery and go through the fault finding flowchart in The Stator Papers. I would recommend an AGM battery, a Rick's stator, and a Honda r/r unit from our good friend and forum member Mr. duaneage.

You'll find lots of GS850 lovin' on my website, including guides for testing and replacement of charging system components.

Anyway, I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
