    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Black exhaust tip and gas smell

Hi guys

looking for some ideas here.

I've been working on my bike and it finally runs nice. The only problem I have is that the back of the exhaust gets pretty black rather quickly. Also I can smell gas when deaccelerating to a full stop. There's no smell in the garage in the morning.

Fuel consumption is about 35-40 mpg.

I cleaned the carbs and replaced all orings and did a bench sync (no proper sync yet). I also adjusted the valves to within spec.

Any ideas as to where I begin looking for the cause of the black exhaust and fuel smell?
 
Sounds like it's running rich. First check to make sure air box is not restricted and that the air filter is properly oiled (not overly oiled). If everything looks good, then I would suggest pulling carbs and check to make sure float height is within spec. How many turns out did you set the mixture screws after your carb rebuild? 2.5 turns is a good start, then tune to highest idle. Good luck.
 
The filter is brand new and came preoiled, so that should be alright. I'll check it though.

The mixture was set to 2.5 out and i did try to adjust to highest idle from that, but I wasn't really able to tell much difference when turning them. I think I suspected a bigger change in the idle.

I'll pull the carbs and check the float-height (again).

What about the main jet? Maybe the previous owner changed it to a bigger one? Would that cause the symptoms I'm describing?

Won't be the mains unless you're running around with the right grip twisted wide open, all the time. I would still suspect the air filter being over oiled and or a PO may ay installed larger pilots and or shimmed the needles?
