Blue 78 1000C project

Nice to know we can swap fuel petcocks. Looking sweet, yes its moving along quickly. Should be able to get in some riding before winter. I'm gearing up for another winter build. I only wish I had your energy and knowledge

Chuck, it never gets old receiving new parts does it.:tears_of_joy:

Awesome that those emblems are still available as it really makes the bike look spectacular.

Your progress is impressive.

David.

I still need a few things other than new tires though. I need the speed nuts that hold the seat trim to the pan and new airbox to carb boots. Little bit out of each check and it moves at a decent pace.

Minor details, and easy to do...If this were my build, I'd still be scraping paint off the frame and engine. It's taken me a couple of years, and I'm still not as far along as you've gotten in a couple of weeks :dancing:

I've definitely learned a few things by following your thread though...some time saving tricks, and some easier ways to do things that I struggled with.

Sam..thanks. Doing a few gets your game plan ironed out. I kinda just start with the frame and make it a roller again after cleaning up the rims. Then i do the engine and exhaust and get them back on. After that its clean, repair..or order a replacement part..and just add to the roller. I do suggest getting the tins painted rather early so they have time to gas out and harden a good while before its time to throw them onto the frame.

Ordered brake pads tonight and I got the new chain. Now for the sprockets and pads to all be here and I can take a little spin around the block.

Hooked up the fuel sending unit and the fuel line. As you can see it just bend in front of the #1 carb with the 750 petcocks and no kinks. Ive never had one wear through as there isnt any wiggling going on between the tank and frame. Also got the seat trim on the pan. Bottom edges are surprisingly very closely aligned!! Will take better pics when i roll it into the drive and some good daylight.

OH NO NO...the flames were to burn that Kreem out of there. Acetone only made it a snot mess like thick Elmers glue. I was out of patience and had another tank just in case...so let the BBQ begin!!!!

Chuck, I couldn't help myself to tease you a little, that was amazing that it worked without destroying the tank.

I probably would have used a propane torch and never told anyone if I had thought of that.

David.

Really nice work there! Wish I was as talented or had the time.......maybe someday???? Hope you get what it's worth if you sell it! Quality work is worth paying for!!! Nice thread on the restore.

Lets call tonight escapades "How to make a 98 dollar 750 petcock look like a 300 dollar 1000 petcock". Note in the first two pics that both bodies have a notch for the rear facing elbow to lock into..but the 750 just has a straight nipple coming off it.

So we remove both nipples from the petcocks...

So now is here the fun begins. The original 1000 brass tube was smaller than the new 750 nipple. So there had to be some drilling of the old 1000 petcocks elbow to accept the straight nipple from the new 750 petcock.....

Old 1000 elbow with the stock brass pipe..

The 1000 elbow drilled out to accept the straight nipple off the new 750 petcock..

Had to cut about 3/16 inch off the 750 straight nipple and champfer the end. Little JB Welds to ensure no leaks and tap it into the 750 petcock facing to the inside of the tank....toward the fuel tee on the carbs that is.

KBZPom.jpg

Rear facing elbow tapped into place....With the tab aligned with the notch.

And last was to swap back covers and I made the suction nipple face down for ease of getting the vacuum line on...

Thanks for the compliments guys. Its gotten a lot of looks but not too many comments. Guess no comments are meaning its passing most folks approval???

Lurking silently during the rebirth...words fail me on how well you do this!

This morning as calibrate the sender unit to hit the half tank mark with 2.5 gallons of fuel in the tank. As you can see its about dead on. And I rolled it out into the drive for a little video and now you can see her in better light than the pics I have been posting. Mailman just dropped off the front sprocket so guess where Im headed to right now!!!

Got some goodies in the mail today. "Should" have all the brakes done and new chain and sprockets on by bedtime tomorrow night. Then we can see how well she rolls around the hood if theres still time.

Rode the bike 7 miles tonight. Got brake pads on and brakes bled. Installed the front sprocket and chain. Put the mirror on and adjusted all the switch boxes to be where i want them. Mind you i still need to get the airbox to carb boots but other than that the bike seems to be pretty good. Has all the gears and shifts like silk. So so very close.

I hope you don't restore bikes "by the hour", or if you do, when can I bring you one? Great work at a astonishing pace! Can't wait to see more pics of this one.
