    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bolt and nut to hold on lower right hand shock

Hi everyone

My 1979 suzuki gs850g has a misesing nut on the right hand size of the lower rear shock.

Some of the threads have rusted and fallen off. Obviously I want to replace this bolt and nut.


Can I safely get a new bolt and nut for this at a hardware store or is this a specialty only go-to-the-dealership thing ?

As long as the bolt is metric grade 8.8 or higher you can use it. 8.8 is similar to SAE grade 5 (the type bolt with three lines on the head). I would not use stainless steel or just some ordinary metric bolt.
 
Be aware that this nut is a fine 10mm X 1.25 thread pitch, not a "standard" 10mm X 1.5 thread.

A real hardware store should have this. Meanard's, bLowes, and Home Despot will probably not. If some dipwad previous owner tried to thread on a nut with the wrong thread pitch, you may need to clean up the threads with a thread file or the correct die.


On your bike ('79 850G) the "bolt" is a stud that's part of the swingarm.

Later models of the 850 used a bolt that threaded into the swingarm.

Does that mean I need a new swingarm ?
 
Post a picture of said threads and you will receive the answers you seek.
 
Find someone with a tap and die set and ask them to thread that nub.
