    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Bolt sizes for carb stuff

Hey ya'll

Tonight I'll be cleaning my last carb. SWEET! I would like to replace all necessary bolts with hex screws. Would someone be so kind as to tell me what size I need.

-carb rail front
-carb back
-should I replace float bowl bolts?
-Should I replace top of crab bolts?

I have ordered my intake bolts from Robert Barr so that is covered

Well, I wasn't able to find anything at Home Depot? Also, I'm looking for hex heads, but should I be looking for allen heads instead?
 
You won't find anything at Home Depot -- the home stores are worthless as far as metric stuff. Worthless in many other ways as well, but that's another topic.

You need a REAL hardware store -- Ace or DoItBest hardware stores should have a nice selection of metric stainless steel allen head goodies.

The problem is that the mouth-breathers working at most local hardware stores usually don't bother to keep tabs on stock, so they're usually short on the exact fasteners you need. In addition, they are eye-wateringly expensive. You could easily spend $80-$90 for the assortment mentioned above, assuming you can find them in stock and that they haven't been scrambled around too much -- measure and verify everything.

If I were you, I'd order them from one of the following:

http://www.boltdepot.com <== order only exactly what you need

http://www.mcmaster.com <== cheapest per-piece, but you have to buy in quantities of 25, 50, or 100. I like having extras, so I usually order from McMaster. They ship fast and cheap, too.

The technical term to look for is "socket head cap screws". Stainless steel, of course. Don't worry about the higher grade stainless -- the standard less expensive grade is fine unless you're riding your GS through acid-laden steam.

Also, if you look on a microfiche site for your bike that uses real Suzuki part numbers (such as http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com ), you can often (but not always) identify the sizes of the fasteners you need by decoding the part number.

For example, here's a Suzuki part number for a 6X12mm screw:
02112-06127 <== 6mm thread diameter
02112-06127 <== 12mm thread length

This doesn't always work, but it's handy at times.

The "manifold fixing screws" vary between models -- some are 20mm long. The rest looks about right for CV carbs.
 
I have gobs of SS screws, flat washers, & lock washers for the GS1000 & GS1100 CV carbs. I sell 'em in sets for a fair price. Have had many buyers from the forum. The reason why I do this is, as bwinger said, I bought 'em in bulk.

Your bike may have different sizes. If you can measure the size & length, I can see if I can help you. (Hint: For the tapered screws, measure from the top of the taper).

If you are willing to settle for a more OE look and just need new hardware because yours is rusted or stripped, Z1 sells packages of 25 screws in various lengths for about $8. Still not cheap but cheaper than going stainless.
 
there are also ready made kits on ebay for the carbs. or you can just take one of each screw into ace or do it best and figure the size out there. people there are usually pretty helpful with that sort of thing.
