A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Broke down - no gears GS1100G

I got some extra exercise this morning walking to work. Fortunately only a half hour walk.

I was at a light in 1st gear. Took off (once turned green) and then went to shift into 2nd and it was like I put it in neutral. I looked at the gear indicator and it said 2nd. Then I tried 3rd and 4th but same thing.

Pulled over and tried first gear (it showed the light for 1st) but same thing.

The cable pulls and it feels like the resistance is the same but I am not sure.

1982 GS1100G - borrowed from a friend while a work on my carbs etc.

Any thoughts appreciated:(.

Thanks.

David

Kinda sounds like the splines give out... I think Josh said that's how it happened to him too.. sitting at a light :-k

It was the splines but they were custom!!!! Check it out...

The PO got real creative instead of just buying another spline hub. Even a used one would have been better. Look at these pics.

The PO cut out 3 spaces on the differential side and then welded 3 pieces of metal to the worn down hub to match up to the cut out spaces. Anyone ever seen that before?????
Here are some more shots...

As you can see above the PO also drilled out 3 of the studs all the way thru. For what purpose I don't know.

The current owner that I borrowed this bike from has lots of extra parts. Had an extra wheel from a 850 with a brand new looking spline on it. We are also going to replace the pumpkin from a parts bike.

Thanks again for all the wisdom and the proper direction in looking for an answer.

is that jb weld? so he notched the spline and then welded/glued some thing to the drive so his notches would grab?

Real welds but poorly done. Yes he welded 3 "thicker or wider" splines to fit. Alot of work. We found two of the pieces floating in there.

Sure was creative of the PO, but what an abortion!!
For around $50 he could have replaced the spline and not have ruined the pumpkin side and wasted all that useless effort. The pumpkin spline never wears out in my experience...so now you spend more time swapping out the pumpkin and still have to replace the wheel spline.

Its just one of those things that you have to wonder what they were thinking when they started doing the work. I mean you figure the splines went out on the PO, so he must have looked up the parts and must have known the price of those parts...But how broke do you have to be to waste that much time for something that would have cost 50$ to fix...

It really is a shame. I can understand trying to be creative if you have no other options but in this case there were lots of better options. If you are gonna do a job do it right or don't even bother. Sometimes you just shake your head and wonder....

about a month after i got my gs, i figured it was time to clean the air filter, not knowing if the po had done it. i found a fram oil filter jammed in there.

i wish i knew more about mechanics, so i could find other "gems" deposited throughout the bike.

That... that was freaking hilarious.

Glad you got it sorted!

POs are a plague. The one who had my bike was supposedly an Air Force mechanic. Let's just say I'm glad I never had to ride in one of the aircraft he worked on.

When Al bought his pristine GS850GL with 6,000 miles on it, I thought it would surely be free of the curse of the PO. But no, some thumb-fingered hack had been at work inside the carburetors...
