A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Good morning folks. Picked up an 82 550 that needs some love. I have no idea what’s been done as I got it from auction and I’m trying to build it right. I k ow the valves definitely need adjusted or replaced (ticking from the top end) and the carbs are way off ( can’t idle u less with choke, still stutters and dies when I roll off throttle) and it has an aftermarket exhaust (4-1) and no air cleaner. Since I have to dive into all this, what is a good and easy combination of nozzles and air to get some go-go and maintain reliability? Should I go to pods while I can? Do I need to do any clutch work? I already have to replace the sprocket gasket, is there anything in there I should look at?

Good morning and welcome.

No idea what a sprocket gasket is. You may want to have a look at the Top 10 Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature.

Sure needs some type of filters. If it has orig. jets, it will never run right with no filters or pods. Like he said, sprocket gasket?????. He also said welcome, me too.

It makes sense to be a gasket to me but I have an oil leak from the sprocket makes sense that there would be a gasket? Maybe a seal?
i scrolled through the top 10 mistakes, number 10 would have been well heeded 6 months ago but lessons learned I did use a rebuild kit (I forget where from) probably isn’t helping any.

See BikeCliffs website link in my signature for a factory service manual. See any parts website like partshark.com to look up your bike year and model, see exploded views of each system of your bike. There’s likely a seal in the crankcase behind the front sprocket. Whether that seal is changeable without splitting cases, IDK.

Rule #11 is get it running and functional before you "build". "Just needs carb work" is a Craigslist cliche
