A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Building a remote starter

I want to build my own remote starter whats a good auto starter to use? Take me through this!!

I'm trying to remember here. I think you need a gear reduction starter run with 2 batteries at 24 volts. An old chrysler/dodge starter with a socket carefully welded to the end. + from one battery to the - of the other battery. Then take the + from one battery and the - from the other to your starter. Ask the guys at dragbike.com. One of them should know. It's been so long since I built my last one.

This is what I've been thinking of doing soon.

I'd like to build 2 compack units like the the Jr dragsters uses, a self contain unit with the battery next to the starter with a button. Then I would weld some brackets on it so it would sit on the wheelie bars for transport from my truck to the staging lanes where i could remove it quicky. Start the bike in the pits set it on the bars, go to the lanes and leave it there for the night. I'd have a second one back at the truck to start it there too. Should be easy'er than trying to tow a big start cart around.

Just my 2 cents.

When I think of a starter cart, I think of a support team that helps you out.

I have one a friend of mine built. Part of it sticks out the front and leans on the motor when you start it. He could start the bike, by himself, while sitting on it. I had a 2 handed version. I could start it by myself, but it was a pain. I'll try to post a pic in a day or 2.

I thought it was so you could warm it up on those cold winter mornings...

I've considered doing this, but I don't think it's safe. I, like most people, park my bike in first gear so it won't roll away. If you hit the remote starter in gear, the bike is going down for sure. You're not there to pick it up. Gas spills out the gas cap. It's just a disaster in the making I think.

It might be possible, however, to build into your circuit, a cutoff that will only allow the remote starter to work if the green neutral light is on.

This is the one my friend built. A one handed job. Worked great, but I prefer push button start.
This is a car starter for big high compression motors. It's not to warm the bike up.

Hey Jimbo, I use a newer-mid 90's Dodge truck starter for mine, socket welded on the end, everything mounted on a flat alum. plate. It works real good! I am currently running 2 batteries and 24 volts, but that isn't required if you have a smaller engine. My engine is 1428, hi-compression (15:1+) so it needs the 24 volts. When I ran a smaller motor with less compression, it would start no problem with one 12v battery. Use good cables, connectors and a good quality button and you won't have any trouble.

I read that thread title and I was thinking about warming up the bike from my bedroom :-) I wonder how much weight a remote starter saves on a bike?

So hang a ford solinoid on it for the load and a push button, or a remote starter button
