Burning oil, when is it too much

Those numbers don't indicate bad rings. It may have stuck oil control rings, but the compression rings are still good.

The compression numbers look decent, yes, but what about the blue smoke on acceleration? and what is an "oil control ring"? thanks Dale.

The top two rings are the compression rings. The third one down is the oil control ring. It consists of two wipers and an expander. If the oil control ring is stuck in it's groove, because of varnish or carbon, the engine will smoke.

When you do go to repair it, if it were mine, I'd pull the head and cylinders just to inspect the bores, the rings and get the base gasket and stud o-rings replaced. Thirty four year old gaskets tend to leak.

(4) of P/N# 09280-74002 which are $2.94 USD ea @ boulevard (ditto the above)

And Flyboy should have a spare OEM base gasket

I'm with you on this one Rusty, mine was using a qt. per thousand. It ran fine and I have to admit that it just jumped up my hiney having to add oil every time I stopped for gas. I found bad valve seals, leaking head gasket, leaking base gasket and the oil control rings were so bad that the return holes in the pistons were completely blocked.

Now it uses between 8 and 10 oz. between oil changes, runs like a new one, I feel like I can take it anywhere at any time with no issues and more importantly doing the work satisfied my obsessive compulsive disorder:rolleyes:

these are fine machines when maintained properly and it will probably last longer than I will.

Cheers

azr;1668376 I just want to get through the season with her said:
Of course I'd rescue you again, the dog misses you!

But, I hope to be riding with you rather than sitting at home twiddling my thumbs this year

I'd pour some Rislone or similar down the spark plug holes and see if the oil rings free up

#3 carb problems? Petcock related?

Looks like I had better reread that thread. Didn't think I could get away with not doing the rings, but maybe so. Hey Sandy, Ya I am hoping to make Charlies this September. Not sure which bike, the 78 or the 80 but either way I'm hoping to be there. Might try and bring Trevor along as well. You heading down with a group?

Yeah, I should be there and probably bring a couple of buddies. This crowd is sort of addictive. Might have to learn how to ride all over again though. Life's been crazy, bike hasn't turned a wheel since last fall.:o

Dale, thanks for the education on the rings, always learning something on this site. I've seen those NOS OEM cylinder gaskets on ebay before but have always been reluctant to use them. Can a gasket that old really still be ok to use? Maybe I'm wrong.

Todd, never heard of Rislone before, looks like our Canadian Tire sells it, I'm sure the local Auto shop has something like is as well, I'm guessing if the oil rings are stuck and free up I should be able to notice by simply having less blue smoke? As far as #3 not firing it all seems to be pointing to something plugged in the carb. I put a new rack on it a few weeks ago (I rebuilt them for a guy last fall then bought the bike from him, used the rack as it had all new parts) and every since then I had intermittent non firing on #3 or #4 so I just figured something was floating around in there. Now it's isolated to #3 only. As far as I can 'tell' the petcock seems to be functioning, it's not leaking anyways, do you have some thoughts on that? It would be great to see you this year, riding the bike rather than fixing it of course. Although the multiple personal tours into town were great for me, especially Doc Browns:) As usual I've got 12-14 days off around the rally so I'm hoping to make another trip out of it. I'll be getting in touch before I head down for sure.

Sandy, I doubt you'll be doing much relearning, pretty sure it's in you like breathing is to the rest of us.

There is a NOS head gasket installed on my 80 850, I sent a NOS aftermarket head gasket for Stan to use on Jennifer and a NOS head gasket awaiting installation on the Skunk. I have quite a few NOS cam cover gaskets in the basement for my old 82 and I wouldn't hesitate using them either. The only thing I would not use is an old hard base gasket.

Rob I have a NOS set of (4) O.E.M. 12100-49810-000 piston ring sets if you are interested.

Eric

Dale, that's good to hear. I guess I can just look and ask about any damage to the gasket and if all looks/sounds good then it should be no problem, thanks. All the 0-rings are cheap enough to buy.

Eric, I might be interested in the ring set for sure, I'll PM you about it.

I have one of the Harbor Freight plug cleaners pictured earlier. Ran the same set of plugs in the Shadow for 6 years. I used it today to clean the plugs I pulled out of the 73 Yamaha TX750 project im working on. I use the air gun to blow the blasting grit out of the wells and the threads and they look good as new from the box.

I take it from the -000 in the part number the rings are standard size. If Rob doesn't want them I'd like to be next in line. No rush in deciding Rob, I'd just like to have them in my parts stock.

Yes Sandy is correct. (As usual! ;) )
Standard bore parts.

If Rob doesn't need them, Sandy gets them.

Rob, whether I make the rally or not, be sure to connect with me for some back roads you won't find on your map

On the way back, Tuesday will be TWT night at Mike's. He collects Kawasaki Triples and will have 8 mint ones by then. Plus, acres of dirt riding

Sandy, the same for you
